More than 5,000 ha of mango in Dong Thap granted area codes for export

A total of 5,284 out of 12,000 hectares of mango in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap have secured area and packaging codes for export, a local official has said.

According to Huynh Tat Dat, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, of the area, 1,019 hectares are qualified for export to developed countries like the US, Australia, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea (RoK), while the remainders are eligible for export to China.

The area covers localities in Cao Lanh city and Cao Lanh district, the official added.

The geographical indication for mango in Cao Lanh is the first of its kind in Dong Thap, which has helped to affirm the quality of the fruit and promote its presence in not only the domestic market but also demanding foreign markets like the US, Australia and Europe.

The grant of the area and packaging codes has also contributed to forming material areas in Dong Thap, mainly in the city and district of Cao Lanh. Dong Thap has selected mango as one of the five products in its agricultural restructuring scheme. The Mekong Delta province has established eight cooperatives, 37 cooperative groups and 23 clubs of mango growers.

Five products of three local production facilities have been certified as OCOP products and sold at supermarkets.

Int’l conference discusses infodemic in COVID-19 context

An international conference titled ‘Managing the Infodemic in the Context of the COVID-19 pandemic’ was held on November 9.

The event was jointly organised by the Academy of Journalism and Communication (AJC), the Nhan dan (People) newspaper and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

‘Infodemic’ appeared along with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic across the globe, causing difficulties for the implementation of prevention and control measures, heard the event.

During two sessions, participants discussed infodemic in the context of COVID-19; shared experience, ideas and solutions to enhance effective communications on the pandemic; improve the role of the press; efforts to counter misinformation and bolster new technology application.

Editor-in-Chief of Nhan dan newspaper Le Quoc Minh underscored the role of information verification, adding that it must be viewed as social and professional responsibility of press agencies. He called on the agencies to step up technology investment to support such tasks.

KOICA Director-General Cho Han-deog said the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an information crisis that is detrimental to people’s trust in social institutions. It is not a problem of a single nation and requires suitable, timely and innovative solutions, he added.

The event was part of international scientific conferences co-held by the AJC, KOICA and press agencies from 2016, which also help experts of Vietnam and the Republic of Korea share experiences and solutions in the field.

Energy firm honoured at The Solar Future Awards 2021

Vietnam – Australia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held

Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son and his Australian counterpart Marise Payne co-chaired the annual third Vietnam – Australia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Hanoi on November 9.

Both sides shared the view that the Vietnam-Australia Enhanced Economic Engagement Strategy, which was adopted by the two PMs on the sidelines of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP-26), plays an important role in realising the goal of turning both nations into one of the top 10 trade partners of each other and doubling two-way trade.

Australia will enhance investment and assist Vietnam in innovation, green and sustainable growth, and hi-tech agriculture while maintaining official development assistance for the Southeast Asian nation.

On labour collaboration, Australia will consider applying “agriculture passport” for Vietnamese workers.

They also pledged to reinforce defence ties and activities in the United Nations peacekeeping mission.

About education-training, Payne affirmed that Australia will offer more scholarships to Vietnamese students, and consider allowing fully vaccinated Vietnamese students to return to Australia for study.

As regards to joint work against COVID-19 pandemic, she said the Australian Government committed 5.2 million vaccine doses to Vietnam and additional 2.6 million on the occasion, bringing the total to 7.8 million. She added that Australia will deliver 700,000 doses to Vietnam in coming weeks.

On regional and global issues of shared concern, Payne affirmed that Vietnam will continue stepping up collaboration for the sustainable development ot the Greater Mekong Sub-region, especially in climate change response.

She expressed support for Vietnam’s organisation of the ASEAN Forum on Sub-regional Cooperation for sustainable development and inclusive growth later this month.

Sharing viewpoints and stances on the East Sea issue, the two ministers stated that disputes need to be addressed peacefully on the basis of respect for international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

On the occasion, they witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two foreign ministries, and a ceremony to present awards to four Vietnamese firms in a green growth business partnership programme launched by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
