Vietnam has 64,000 digital firms in total

About 5,600 digital technology firms were established in 2021, raising the total number of such firms in Vietnam to around 64,000, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications.

Noting that the number of “Make in Vietnam” companies has increased sharply, Nguyen Thanh Tuyen, Deputy Director of Information Technology Department under the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) said at a recent press conference. that the digital technology enterprises are employing more than one million employees.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic has made digital transformation go faster and stronger as well as given a push to the digital business community.

Many digital enterprises have shifted from doing contracted work for foreign brands to developing Industry 4.0 products. So far, 34 “Make-in-Vietnam” platforms have been recognized by the ministry.

Major corporations from both State and private sectors, such as VNPT, Viettel, CMC and FPT, own great potential and have played a big part in building e-Government and national digital platforms, and boosting digital economy at large.

Statistics show that Vietnam’s digital industry expanded over 9 percent in 2020, three times as high as the GDP growth.

National strategy aims to provide clean water to rural residents by 2030

Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh signed a decision approving the National Rural Clean Water Supply and Sanitation Strategy by 2030, with a vision to 2045.

The strategy aims to ensure rural residents’ access to clean water with reasonable prices, ensure sanitation at households and public places, reduce diseases related to water resources and sanitation, improve local people’s living conditions, and narrow the gap between rural and urban areas.

By 2030, around 65 percent of rural population are expected to use clean water, with at least 60 liters per person per day while 100 percent of rural households, schools and medical facilities will have hygienic latrines.

The Government targets to raise the rate of treated wastewater in rural residential areas to 15 percent over the next decade and to 30 percent by 2045.

By 2045, 100 percent of rural residents are expected to use clean water and hygienic latrines.

The ratio of breeding farms having waste treatment system is expected to reach 75 percent in 2030 and 100 percent in 2045.

To this end, the strategy outlines a number of solutions, including the construction of large-scale clean water supply works in rural areas with connection with those in urban areas to ensure their effective and sustainable operations, and exploiting reservoirs of irrigation works for clean water supply.

The strategy also focuses on applying the model of safe water storage in household, and launching a pilot model of clean water kiosks and ATMs to provide water for direct drinking in residential areas and schools in case of emergency situations.

AmCham Vietnam has new President

John Rockhold has been elected as the new Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham Vietnam) in 2022, succeeding Virginia Foote, who held the post in 2020 and 2021, according to the latest announcement of AmCham Hanoi.

Founded in 1994, AmCham Hanoi is a non-profit organisation whose primary mission is to promote trade and investment ties between the US and Vietnam. AmCham’s members provide billions of USD in foreign investment, tens of thousands of direct employees and hundreds of thousands of indirect employees, and significantly contribute to Vietnam’s exports and tax revenues.

AmCham and its member companies are optimistic about prospects for economic reopening and recovery in Vietnam, Rockhold said.

Transport infrastructure development provides leverage for GDP growth

The Ministry of Transport is coordinating with relevant ministries and agencies to develop a portfolio of transport projects and specific mechanisms for the implementation of the projects which will form part of the Government’s socio-economic recovery and development programme post-COVID-19, according to Minister Nguyen Van The.

The programme will be submitted to the National Assembly for review in its first meeting of 2022, The told the Vietnam News Agency.

Provided that the projects are given priority in investment allocation so construction can start early, it will give a major push to production recovery, boost the growth of trade and services, and improve people’s living conditions, the Minister of Transport noted.

Transport infrastructure development would play a part in rapidly reviving other economic sectors, accelerating public investment disbursement, and providing necessary leverage for the GDP growth, he emphasized, adding Vietnam aims to have about 5,000km of expressway by 2030 as set in the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress.

The 729km eastern section of the North – South Expressway is among the country’s six major projects from 2021 – 2025, he said, describing it as a particularly important project which has been receiving special attention from the Government, Prime Minister and public.

According to the minister, the project has total investment of close to 147 trillion VND (6.43 billion USD). It will be divided into 12 key components separately developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP). It is expected to contribute to spurring Vietnam’s post-pandemic economic recovery, he said.

VNA Deputy Director-General becomes member of committee for AIDS, drug, prostitution fight

Nguyen Tuan Hung, Deputy Director-General of the State-run Vietnam News Agency (VNA) has become a member of the National Committee for AIDS, Drug and Prostitution Prevention and Fight.

Under Decision No. 2267/QD-TTg signed by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, Hung replaces Nguyen Hoai Duong who is a former Deputy Director-General of the VNA.

The National Committee for AIDS, Drug and Prostitution Prevention and Fight is an inter-sectoral agency tasked to assist the Prime Minister in directing and co-ordinating the prevention of AIDS, drug abuse and prostitution.

It supports the PM in directing the building of strategies, policies, programmes and plans on the prevention and control of AIDS, drug crime and prostitution as well as supervising the implementation of the schemes and policies.

The committee also helps the PM direct the coordination among ministries, sectors and localities in the prevention and control of AIDS, drug and prostitution, as well as programmes, plans and resources for the work, conduct international cooperation in the field and make periodical report to the PM on the results.
