A Delegation Registration Meeting (DRM) will take place in Hanoi next month for Vietnam, as the host, to confirm the registration of all athletes to participate in the upcoming SEA Games.

The event will be held among chiefs of delegations and National Olympic Committees of Southeast Asian nations from May 1 – 6 in both in-person and virtual forms.

The meeting will discuss and confirm all information regarding the organisation of the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31), from the number of athletes, entry and exit procedures, venues, accommodations, match schedules, doping testing to transport, logistics, reception, healthcare and security services, and more.

The event is expected to be attended by about 80 delegates, including 35-45 from Vietnam and 30-40 from other regional countries.

The Vietnamese team will compete at the region’s biggest sports event, which runs from May 12 – 23, with 1,359 members.

At the 30th SEA Games in 2019, Vietnam finished second in the overall medal tally, with 98 golds, 85 silvers and 105 bronzes, just behind the host Philippines.

A total of 14,660 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the past 24 hours from 4pm April 16 to 4pm April 17, according to the Ministry of Health.

Hanoi continued to report the highest number of infections on the day with 1,253 cases.

The national tally now reached 10,432,547.

A total of 5,472 COVID-19 patients were given the all clear on April 11, bringing the number of recoveries so far to 8,936,846.

An additional 10 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, taking the total fatalities to 42,944, equal to 0.4 percent of the total caseload.

By April 16, the country had injected 209,483,478 doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha Om Birla will pay an official visit to Vietnam from April 19-21, according to the National Assembly’s Foreign Relations Committee.

The visit will be made at an invitation by NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, it said.

Various art performances of a contest for Vietnamese youths in Russia have been staged at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University).

The contest was the first major activity of young Vietnamese people in Russia after more than two years of hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to mark the 91st anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the 47th anniversary of the liberation of the south of Vietnam and national reunification, and the 72nd anniversary of the Vietnam-Russia diplomatic ties.

Lasting for more than a month, the contest attracted the participation of Vietnamese students across Russia, organisers said.

The best 16 performances staged on April 16 featured the land and people of Vietnam, as well as the innovative spirit of Vietnamese youths in Russia.

The Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) undersea cable, which connects eight countries and territories in the region, is facing problems with its S1.7 section, about 910km from Southeast Asia.

The fault was detected at 9pm on April 15, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) said on April 17, noting that there has been no information about the repair work from the operator so far.

Vietnam’s undersea internet cables break around 10 times a year on average, with each lasting for about a month.

The APG cable, officially launched in December 2016, is capable of providing bandwidths of up to 54 Tbps (Terabit per second). It runs 10,400 kilometers (6,460 miles) under the Pacific Ocean, linking Japan with Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Vietnam is considered one of the countries with the highest internet usage and development speed in the world.

As of January 2021, out of its population of over 96 million people, the number of internet users reached approximately 69 million, according to a global consumer survey by German data portal Statista.

The second Vietnam Card Day was launched in Hanoi on April 16 with the theme of “Leading the way”.

The two-day event includes main activities such as experiencing cashless payment technology at all of the booths, demonstrating the most modern and advanced bank card payment technology.

Visitors could access and experience VietQR technology at the check-in area and receive gifts and shopping activities; approach and experience digital technology such as contactless payment, QR code, NFC technology, digital banking, and eKYC technology.

The organisers will also provide information and warnings about risks in payment activities, help customers learn new criminal methods and tricks, and measures to avoid risks in payment activities.

The first Vietnam Card Day took place between November 7 and 8, 2020.

There have been more than 1.8 million accounts and 1.5 million cards opened by eKYC method in Vietnam so far. In addition, non-cash payment activities through e-channels have grown strongly in the past five years, such as: the number of transactions via mobile increased by 50-80 percent a year; via the internet increased by 35-40 percent a year; the percentage of adults with payment accounts at banks reached 66 percent.

The Association of Vietnamese Intellectuals in Japan (AVIJ) will work to promote scientific-technological, cultural and educational cooperation between Vietnam and Japan in 2021-2023.

During its congress in Tokyo on April 16, the association set out operation orientations for the term when a database of Vietnamese scientists and experts in Japan is expected to be built.

The association will also organise activities marking the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries, heard the congress.

Ambassador Vu Hong Nam commended the association for its meaningful operations over the past time, notably its successful organisation of the Vietnam Summit in Japan in 2021 which brought together nearly 900 Vietnamese intellectuals in the host country.

The congress elected a new executive board, with Ta Viet Phuong, who is working for Amazon Group in Japan, as president.

The AVIJ was established during a congress in Tokyo on November 14, 2019, aiming to gather Vietnamese individuals and intellectuals, and promote their role and position in Japan.

According to the Immigration Bureau of Japan, there were over 371,000 Vietnamese people living in Japan as of late June 2019, becoming the third largest foreign community behind China and the Republic of Korea.
