Plug Supplies Walmart with Green Hydrogen to Fuel Retailer’s Fleet of Material Handling Lift Trucks

Liquid green hydrogen to fuel up to 9,500 lift trucks across Walmart distribution and fulfillment centers, supporting the retailer’s goal of a zero emissions future by 2040

LATHAM, N.Y., April 19, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG), a leading provider of turnkey hydrogen solutions for the global green hydrogen economy, today announced an agreement with Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) for an option to deliver up to 20 tons per day of liquid green hydrogen to power material handling lift trucks across Walmart distribution and fulfillment centers in the U.S., marking an additional step the retailer is taking to incorporate alternative zero-carbon energy sources throughout Walmart’s supply chain. This is one of the first green hydrogen supply contracts for Plug, validating the company’s multi-year investment in its green hydrogen network.

“Walmart has been an early adopter of innovative hydrogen and fuel cell technology for over a decade, and our hydrogen-powered solutions offer a tool to enhance productivity improvements for Walmart’s operations,” said Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug. “Now our green hydrogen solutions will provide Walmart with the ability to achieve significant carbon reduction. We are honored to expand our relationship with Walmart and realize our shared vision for a green hydrogen future.”

Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water with electricity generated from zero-carbon sources and only harmless oxygen is emitted during the process, making it a clean, secure and affordable energy solution. Through Plug’s investment in its vertically integrated green hydrogen ecosystem, the company will deliver green hydrogen to Walmart facilities using a fleet of liquid transport Plug has put into service using capabilities gained from its recent acquisition of Applied Cryo Technologies.

Walmart has worked with Plug Power to adopt and expand hydrogen fuel cells throughout its facilities for over a decade, beginning with a 50-fleet pilot in 2012 and expanding to a fleet of 9,500 and growing. Now, the retailer is continuing to decarbonize its operations by striving to incorporate the use of green hydrogen throughout its facilities, in an effort to pursue lift truck operations that are efficient, clean, quiet and most importantly, more sustainable.

“Hydrogen is critical to helping us power a more sustainable supply chain and Plug Power’s hydrogen solutions allow us to continue making progress,” said Jeff Smith, Senior Director of Supply Chain Maintenance Services. “Sourcing green hydrogen can help bring Walmart closer to reaching our goal of zero emissions by 2040.”

Over the last several years, Plug has executed on a vision for a network of green hydrogen production facilities across the globe to meet the demand for decarbonization of the economy and address the urgent challenge of climate change. The company is targeting 70 TPD of green hydrogen production by end of 2022 and remains on track for 500 TPD of production in North America by 2025 and 1,000 TPD on a global basis by 2028.

About Plug

Plug is building an end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem, from production, storage and delivery to energy generation, to help its customers meet their business goals and decarbonize the economy. In creating the first commercially viable market for hydrogen fuel cell technology, the company has deployed more than 50,000 fuel cell systems and over 165 fueling stations, more than anyone else in the world, and is the largest buyer of liquid hydrogen. With plans to build and operate a green hydrogen highway across North America and Europe, Plug is building a state-of-the-art Gigafactory to produce electrolyzers and fuel cells and multiple green hydrogen production plants that will yield 500 tons of liquid green hydrogen daily by 2025. Plug will deliver its green hydrogen solutions directly to its customers and through joint venture partners into multiple environments, including material handling, e-mobility, power generation, and industrial applications. Can Tho eyes more investments from RoK

Representatives of the People’s Committee of Can Tho city on April 19 held a working session with a delegation from the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) to discuss ways to attract more investment projects from the Republic of Korea (RoK).

The event also aimed to review the operation of the Vietnam – RoK industrial technology incubator and a project on agriculture mechanisation in the city.

Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Ngoc He said Can Tho hopes KIAT will serve as a bridge encouraging RoK companies to invest in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta.

Can Tho will create the most favourable conditions, including simplifying administrative procedures for investors, especially RoK firms, he affirmed.

The Vietnamese National Assembly had issued a resolution on a specific mechanism for Can Tho city, including incentives in terms of administrative procedures, taxes and customs, and land rent and use, for businesses investing in the locality, he said.

According to Lim Byung-hyuk, chief representative of KIAT in Vietnam, a “Meet Korea” programme with trade connection and business-to-business events is scheduled in Can Tho this year, hoping to attract RoK companies operating in Vietnam and those that want to invest and seek investment opportunities in Vietnam.

If this event is organised in Can Tho, it will offer a good chance for the Mekong Delta city to lure more Korean investments.

Lim said that KIAT will continue to promote RoK suppliers of spare parts, equipment, and technological machinery to enter the Vietnamese market.

The Vietnam-RoK industrial technology incubator has been in operation since 2015 with a total budget of about 17.7 million USD, with about 3.43 million USD from Can Tho city.

It has been supporting 11 businesses to participate in incubation, and helping 10 other enterprises and production facilities in and outside the city research and perfect new products./.

NA leader holds talks with Indian lower house speaker

National Assembly (NA) Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue held talks with visiting Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha (the lower house) Om Birla in Hanoi on April 19 following an official welcoming ceremony for the guest.

The NA leader lauded the Indian legislator’s visit, especially when Vietnam and India are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

He expressed delight at the growing strategic partnership between the two countries across all fields. Despite the adverse impacts from COVID-19, both sides have maintained and reinforced important cooperation mechanisms, while working together to implement the Action Plan for the 2021-2023 period to make bilateral ties more practical and effective.

Hue noted that amid changing world and regional situations, Vietnam and Indian are sharing many common viewpoints and strategic interests. The Vietnamese NA is willing to discuss and share experience in areas of shared concern, he said.

For his part, the Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha recalled the success of the Vietnamese top legislator’s official visit to India in last December, and suggested that the two parliaments should discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in many areas such as social welfare and issues related to the people, thus contributing to the promotion of the partnership between the two countries.

Noting that Vietnam and India share many similarities in development targets, Birla proposed that both sides strengthen cooperation in areas of trade, investment, science, technology, service, digital transformation, while fostering ties between business communities, and making information technology and service a strategic sector in bilateral partnership.

Vietnam considers India a global power and support India’s greater role in multilateral institutions and in maintaining and ensuring a multi-polar world order based on international law, NA Chairman Hue said, adding that Vietnam backs India to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council when the council is expanded. Vietnam also support India to join the APEC forum, and welcomes India’s Act East policy as well as its deeper engagement in ASEAN-led mechanisms.

Discussing a number of international and regional issues of shared concern, the two legislative leaders agreed on the significance of maintaining peace, stability, cooperation, development and respect to international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982 with regard to the East Sea.

Over the Ukrainian situation, they underscored the importance of respecting international law, and voiced the hope that all relevant parties promote dialogue, negotiations on the foundation of respect for the legitimate interest of all sides in line with international law, ensuring the safety of civilians and settling humanitarian matters.

The Vietnamese top legislator proposed that India support Vietnam’s bid to run for seats in the UN Human Rights Council (2023-2025 tenure), the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (2023-2028 tenure), and the Legal and Technical Commission (2023-2027 tenure).

Regarding parliamentarian cooperation, the two leaders concurred to continue strengthening meetings and exchanges between friendship parliamentarians’ groups as well as collaboration among functional committees of the two parliaments, while sharing experience in law building, election inspections and supervision, and promoting coordination at regional and international forums, including the IPU and APPF. They pledged to promote international cooperation to cope with COVID-19, speed up economic recovery and develop green and sustainable development and innovation.

Chairman Hue said Vietnam is interested in building and completing institution for digital transformation and the shaping of global order basing on international law and respect for the right to self-determination and sovereignty of states.

He suggested that the two parliaments work to speed up the implementation of signed agreements and treaties and coordinate to organise activities marking the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations in 2022.

He noted that after his visit to India, he had asked the Government to work with India to promptly implement the agreements reached during the visit. One of the results is that an Indian firm has chosen Hai Duong province of Vietnam to develop a pharmaceutical park project worth about 12 billion USD.

Hue took the occasion to invite Vice President and and Chairman of the Upper House of India Venkaial Naidu to visit Vietnam./.

Domestic businesses to receive support to increase exports to Germany

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT)’s Trade Promotion Agency will organise an event on April 21 to help domestic firms increase exports to the German market.

Firms will be updated with information on the German market, while questions regarding farm produce and foodstuff with the market will be answered, including demands of the German market regarding quality, payment, transportation and insurance guarantees.

Dr. Rene Schäfer, an international law consultant from Dornbach GmbH, will brief participants on the Vietnam Desk – the agency that provides information to support Vietnamese and German enterprises to develop cooperation opportunities.

Germany is currently the third largest exporter and importer in the world after the US and China. Statistics from ITC Trademap showed that in 2020, the European country’s total import-export revenue reached 2.55 trillion USD, accounting for about 67 percent of its GDP, including 1.37 trillion USD in exports and 1.17 trillion USD in imports.

Germany is also the largest importer of fresh and processed vegetables in the EU. It is among the most selective markets in the world. However, in recent years, German consumers have become more open to international goods.

Vietnam has maintained encouraging growth in exports to the market. In the first quarter of 2022, Vietnam enjoyed a 1.2 billion USD trade surplus with Germany, which was a good sign in line with the rising trend of the country’s trade with the EU after more than one year of implementing the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA)./.
