Book to encourage Vietnamese language learning published in Australia

Charles Sturt University in Australia has released a book to provide Vietnamese families living in the country to teach their children Vietnamese at home.

Titled “VietSpeech Multilingual Children”, the book is the product of research on pronunciation and language for Vietnamese children in Australia funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC). The book is freely available online.

The book covers topics such as the benefits of preserving their native language and multilingualism, ways to help children adapt to the Vietnamese language, and communication skills.

Dr. Tran Hong Van, the co-author of the book, said it will provide parents with the tools to help their children learn the Vietnamese language and develop bilingual skills.

According to Professor Sharynne McLeod, the other co-author, said mother tongues are at risk of disappearing within three generations among migrant families. Many children cannot speak their mother tongue fluently when they start school.

Vietnamese is one of the five most spoken languages in Australia. There are over 300,000 Vietnamese people living in this country, accounting for 1.26 percent of the population.

McLeod said now is an important time for the Vietnamese community in Australia to maintain the mother tongue for younger generations.

The authors hope that the book will be popularised not only in Australia, but also in other countries with large Vietnamese populations such as Canada and the US./.

Party chief urges greater efforts to help Mekong Delta take off

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on April 22 required greater efforts to be made to help the Mekong Delta develop strongly in the near future.

The Party leader made the request at a hybrid national conference held by the Politburo on the implementation of Resolution No. 13-NQ/TW on orientations to promote socio-economic development and ensure security and defence in the Mekong Delta to 2030, with a vision towards 2045.

To well organize the implementation of the resolution, General Secretary Trong urged the whole political system to be fully and deeply aware of the purposes, significance, requirements and content of the resolution.

“We must define it as the responsibility of the entire political system, not just the task of the region and regional localities,” he noted.

It is necessary to create high consensus among authorities at all levels and sectors on the role, position and importance of the region and regional linkage, he said, adding that regional connection must play the role of leading the development of the whole region and each locality.

Priority should be given to fine-tuning institutions and policies for the regional development and linkage, and effectively participate in cooperation activities with Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries, especially in exploiting and using Mekong River water resources.

The Party chief advised the Mekong Delta to take the advantage of the support of the central government as well as the assistance of other localities in the country, especially Ho Chi Minh City and southeastern provinces, for more rapid and sustainable economic development. He requested the Government and central agencies to increase coordination with regional localities to urgently devise, complete, issue and implement laws and policies conducive to the region’s development.

It is necessary to well implement the regional planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision towards 2045 in a green, sustainable and comprehensive direction in line with the national master plan, he said.

The region should combine agricultural development and industry-services development; urban development and new-style rural area building; economic development and resources management and environmental protection.

It also needs to focus on natural disaster response and adaptation to climate change, rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion; and form regional value chains, he added.

The Mekong Delta should step up administrative reform, improve its business and investment environment, attract and effectively use resources for development investment; while allocating capital from the State budget and mobilising social resources for building key works benefiting the regional and inter-regional development.

The Mekong Delta, part of the southern key economic region, is one of the largest deltas in Southeast Asia and the world. It is the biggest food, foodstuff, aquatic products and fruit producer and exporter of the country, making up 50 percent of the nation’s rice output, 95 percent of rice export volume, 60 percent of aquatic output and 70 percent of fruit production./.

Vietnam’s corrosion-resistant steel exports to US rise sharply

Vietnam shipped some 335,000 tonnes of corrosion-resistant steel products (CORE) to the US last year, a three-fold rise from the previous year, according to the United States International Trade Commission (USITC).

Between December 2020 and November 2021, Vietnam exported 374 million USD worth of CORE to the US, accounting for 4.8 percent of the US’s total import value of the products during the period.

The Trade Remedies Authority of Vietnam under the Ministry of Industry and Trade noted that although the US Department of Commerce (DOC) has decided not to initiate an investigation into the alleged circumvention of anti-dumping duties by Vietnam’s CORE made from cold rolled steel (CRS) and hot rolled steel (HRS) imported from Japan, domestic producers still need to take precautions.

On November 17, 2021, the DOC received a request for investigation into the alleged circumvention of anti-dumping duties by Vietnam’s CORE made from CRS and HRS from Japan./.

Indian parliamentary leader’s visit creates motivation for promotion of Vietnam-India ties: Official

The Vietnam visit by Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha (lower house) Om Birla has made great contributions to the strengthening of the Vietnam-India comprehensive partnership as well as the cooperation between the two parliaments, Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Committee for External Relations Vu Hai Ha has said.

Speaking to the media on the outcomes of the visit, Ha said that the visit was a continuation of the success of the India visit by Vietnamese NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue in 2021.

It showed the high level of mutual trust and the close friendship and relationship between the two legislative bodies, he said, adding that it was a highlight of the activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties in 2022.

During his stay, Birla and Vietanamese Party and State leaders agreed on many issues related to the partnership between the two countries and two parliaments, noted Ha.

In terms of politics, the two sides agreed to increase meetings and delegation exchanges at high and all levels through all channels of Party, State, Government and NA as well as people-to-people exchange. India has been one of the countries that have the highest number of delegation exchanges with Vietnam, with nine visits by leaders of both sides within only nearly six years.

Vietnam and India concurred to work closely together in organising practical and diverse activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties, said Ha.

Regarding economy, trade and investment, India has become one of the 10th largest trade partners of Vietnam with two-way trade growth increasing about 20 percent per year, and revenue doubling over the past five years to over 13 billion USD in 2021. The two sides agreed to continue to create optimal conditions for the expansion of bilateral trade relations, while encouraging businesses to invest in each other’s market.

Meanwhile, defence and security have been an important pillar of the bilateral partnership. Vietnam and India will coordinate closely to implement bilateral action plans and cooperation agreements, while fostering collaboration in non-traditional security issues as well as criminal and terrorism prevention and combat.

Both sides also agreed to strengthen cooperation and experience sharing in areas of Indian strength such as digital transformation, digital economy, information technology, cyber security, 5G service supplying, maritime science, and pharmacieutical management. Vietnam and India also reached consensus on bolstering cultural, tourism cooperation and people-to-people exchange as well as Yoga training, while continuing to work together in restoring cultural heritage in the central region and others of Vietnam.

The Indian side pledged to support the implementation of existing cooperation mechanisms between India and ASEAN, said Ha.

He noted that the relations between the two parliaments of Vietnam and India have seen strong growth over the years. Right after COVID-19 was put under control, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue made a trip to India, which created a new important motivation for the growth of bilateral ties in the new period.

The fostering of ties between the two parliaments have made important conributions to the promotion of the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership as well as the ensuring of peace, stability, cooperation and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and the world, stressed Ha.

He held that the potential remains huge for the two parliaments to further promote their ties, especially in institution building and the completion of the legal system serving post-pandemic socio-economic recovery and development.

In the time to come, the two sides will effectively realise their cooperation agreement reached in 2016, while strengthening cooperation among their committees and friendship parliamentarians’ groups. The two sides will continue to coordinate closely at multilateral forums such as IPU, AIPA, ASEP, APPF, and support each other’s viewpoints on regional and international issues of shared interest.

According to Ha, both sides will review and supervise the implementation of signed agreements between governments, ministries and sectors of both sides to make sure their efficiency.

He said that amid the changing situation in the Indo-Pacific region, Vietnam and India are sharing visions and interests. Vietnam highly values the role of India in the world arena, and believes that India will make more contributions to stability, peace and development in the region and the world.

The official said he believes that the fruitful outcomes of the Indian lower house leader’s visit will create new motivation for the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and India, making it deeper, more effective and practical in the time to come./.
