BAAC warns of scammers posing as officials tricking people into installing money-sucking apps

BAAC warns customers and the public not to be fooled by scammers pretending to be electricity officials who trick people into installing system control programs on their phones or money-sucking applications. BAAC has received more than 70 reports of financial fraud from such forms since June to August 2024. Mr. Paisarn Hongthong, Assistant Manager and Spokesperson of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC), revealed that the bank has continuously focused on preventing and suppressing technology crimes. Currently, the fraudulent forms of fraudsters have become more diverse and sophisticated, resulting in damages to a large number of the bank's customers. From June to August 15, the Office of Fraud Management and Prevention reported 76 victims of fraudulent forms of installing system control programs on phones or money-sucking applications. Most of these frauds impersonate electricity authority officials and claim that they have received a refund for their electricity meter deposit. Whe n customers believe them, they will receive a message to add them as friends via the Line application. The fraudsters then ask them to install and set a password to log in to the fake PEA Smart Plus program, which is the same as the password for logging into BAAC Mobile. After filling in the information and pressing confirm, the phone screen will display the download percentage. During that time, the phone will be unable to perform any operations. When the download is complete, it will be found that money has been withdrawn from the account. ?Customers can easily notice this, for example, scammers will have customers add friends via the Line application named PEA, which is not the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand's official Line. They will install a fake PEA Smart Plus application via the Google Play Store. BAAC is therefore warning customers and the public not to believe scammers in such a false claim.
