DDPM reveals flooding in 12 provinces, urgently mobilizes assistance to those affected

DDPM reveals flood situation in 12 provinces, affecting 30,073 households, urgently mobilizing resources to help those affected and alleviate the suffering of the people.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported flooding in 12 provinces: Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Nong Khai, Loei, Ang Thong, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya and Prachin Buri, totaling 39 districts, 182 sub-districts, 797 villages, with 30,073 households affected. Resources are being mobilized into the disaster areas in conjunction with local agencies to provide assistance to the affected people and to quickly resolve the situation.

Mr. Chaiwat Junthiraphong, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), revealed that due to the influence of the moderate monsoon trough across the upper North and the upper Northeast, entering the low-pressure cell in the upper part of Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin, along with the southwest monsoon still covering the
Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand, while there are intermittent winds of the southeast and southwest winds at the upper level covering the Northeast. Between 16 August and 15 September 2024, there will be flash floods and forest runoff in 28 provinces: Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Tak, Phayao, Nan, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Sawan, Phetchabun, Loei, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Nong Bua Lamphu, Prachin Buri, Ang Thong, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Rayong, Phuket, Yala, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phang Nga, Trang and Satun, totaling 129 districts, 600 sub-districts, 3,185 villages, 133,040 households affected, a total of 43 deaths from floods and landslides, and a total of 24 injuries. Currently (as of 15 September 2024), the situation still exists in 12 provinces, a total of 39 districts, 182 sub-districts, 797 villages, and 30,073 households affected, as follows:

1) Chiang Rai: Flooding occurred in 9 districts: Mae Sai, Mae Fah Luang, Mae Chan, Chiang Saen, Doi
Luang, Thoeng, Mueang, Wiang Kaen, and Chiang Khong, totaling 35 sub-districts and 132 villages, affecting 12,215 households. Water levels have decreased.

2) Mae Hong Son: Flooding occurred in 2 districts: Sop Moei and Pang Mapha, including 2 sub-districts and 4 villages, affecting 78 people. Water levels have decreased.

3) Nan: Flooding occurred in Wiang Sa District, including 1 sub-district and 1 village, affecting 25 people. Water levels are rising.

4) Tak: Flooding occurred in 4 districts: Mae Sot, Mae Ramat, and Tha Song Yang, totaling 11 sub-districts and 31 villages, affecting 720 people. Water levels have decreased.

5) Sukhothai: Flooding occurred in Kong Krailat District, including 3 sub-districts and 20 villages, affecting 361 households. Water levels have decreased.

6) Phitsanulok: Flooding occurred in 3 districts: Phrom Phiram, Bang Rakam, and Mueang, totaling 7 sub-districts and 15 villages, affecting 576 households. Water levels are stable.

7) Phetchabun: Flooding occurred in 2 districts:
Nong Phai and Chon Daen, including 5 sub-districts and 13 villages. 49 households were affected. Water levels have decreased.

8) Nong Khai: Flooding occurred in 5 districts: Sangkhom District, Sri Chiang Mai District, Tha Bo District, Mueang District, and Rattanawapi District, totaling 18 sub-districts, 77 villages, affecting 2,528 households. Water levels are rising.

9) Flooding occurred in 2 districts: Pak Chom and Chiang Khan, affecting 7 sub-districts and 27 villages. 7 households were affected. Water levels rose.

10) Ang Thong: Flooding occurred in 3 sub-districts and 16 villages in Wichian Chai District, affecting 346 households. Water levels are stable.

12) Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya: Flooding occurred in 7 districts: Bang Ban, Bang Pa-in, Phak Hai, Sena, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Bang Pa-in, and Bang Sai, totaling 82 sub-districts, 411 villages, affecting 12,820 households. Water levels are stable.

13) Prachin Buri: Flooding occurred in 2 districts: Mueang and Prachantakham, affecting 8 sub-distric
ts and 50 villages, affecting 348 households. Water levels have decreased.

For resolving problems and providing assistance to people affected by floods, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, through the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, has coordinated with the provinces, local administrative organizations, and relevant agencies to go to the area to help the victims and solve their problems urgently by mobilizing operational staff and disaster relief machinery, such as long-distance water pumps, water pumps, disaster relief vehicles, and drinking water production vehicles to drain water to alleviate their suffering and produce clean drinking water to distribute to the affected people. If it is necessary to drain water from the area to other areas, the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office has been instructed to coordinate with operational staff to take action with due consideration to the impact on the people and to choose methods that have the least impact
on the people.

In terms of reinforcing the care and assistance for people in Chiang Rai Province, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) together with the Royal Thai Army (RTA) have joined forces to send 2 KA-32 disaster prevention and mitigation helicopters along with rescue personnel from the DDPM 32 helicopters, ‘The Guardian Team,’ to support the mission to help flood victims in Chiang Rai Province.

In addition, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center, Region 15, Chiang Rai has also sent an operational team with disaster machinery to join the mission to help disaster victims in Chiang Rai Province, consisting of 200 KVA electric lighting vehicles, drinking water production vehicles, disaster victim transport vehicles, rapid rescue vehicles, rapid boat towing vehicles, small trucks, flat-bottomed boats, water rescue equipment, life jackets, and survival bags to help people in the area.

In addition, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has also sent operational
teams with disaster machinery and vehicles from nearby disaster prevention and mitigation centers and disaster prevention and mitigation centers in other regions without disaster situations to join the mission to help disaster victims in the northern region, consisting of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Centers, Region 1 Pathum Thani, Region 2 Suphan Buri, Region 3 Prachin Buri, Region 4 Prachuap Khiri Khan, Region 8 Kamphaeng Phet, Region 9 Phitsanulok, Region 10 Lampang, Region 16 Chainat, and Region 17 Chanthaburi, using the area of ??Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center, Region 15 Chiang Rai as a staging area for the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to receive missions and distribute teams to provide assistance in various areas.

In support of the mission to help flood victims in the Northeast, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has dispatched one KA-32 disaster prevention and mitigation helicopter, along with rescue personnel from the DDPM 32 helicopter, ‘
The Guardian Team,’ stationed in Udon Thani Province to prepare to help victims in the Northeast. In addition, operational teams from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center, Region 7, Sakon Nakhon, Region 14, Udon Thani, and Region 6, Khon Kaen, have been sent to standby to support the mission and disperse teams to help victims in the area.

For areas where the situation has improved, officials have been mobilized to restore the affected areas to normal as soon as possible so that people can return to their normal lives as soon as possible. Officials have also been dispatched to survey and compile an account of the damage in order to provide assistance in accordance with the Ministry of Finance regulations.
