Endangered Javan Pangolin Returned to Quang Tri Forest Rangers

Quang tri: Forest rangers in central Quang Tri province have received a Javan pangolin, also known as Sunda pangolin, a critically endangered species, from a local resident. The animal appeared healthy, weighed 1.3 kg, and measured about 50 cm in length. Its gender has yet to be determined. The Javan pangolin is listed in Vietnam’s Red Book as critically endangered and is protected under Group IB – a category reserved for forest species facing an extremely high risk of extinction and requiring strict conservation measures.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the Javan pangolin is critically endangered due to habitat loss and illegal hunting driven by the demand for its scales and meat. The handover of the pangolin to the forest rangers signifies a crucial step in the preservation efforts for this rare species. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of community involvement in wildlife conservation and are urging local residents to report any sightings of endangered species to help protect them from poaching and illegal trafficking.
