Hai Phong Leads Vietnam’s Fight Against IUU Fishing

Hai phong: Hai Phong is emerging as one of Vietnam’s front runners in tackling illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, from strict control over its fishing fleet, enhanced voyage monitoring, to traceability and sustainable management of marine resources. As of September, Hai Phong had 820 registered fishing vessels, with all registered, licensed, and certified. As many as 283 vehicles 15m and longer have installed vessel monitoring systems (VMS), ensuring continuous 24-hour connectivity. Non-compliant vessels are barred from leaving ports, according to the municipal People’s Committee.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the city has implemented rigorous measures to ensure that all fishing activities are monitored and regulated effectively. This includes the installation of VMS on larger vessels, which plays a crucial role in maintaining real-time oversight over fishing activities. The authorities are enforcing strict penalties on non-compliant vessels, which are prohibited from leaving the ports, demonstrating a firm stance against IUU fishing practices. This concerted effort is part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable fishing and protect marine biodiversity in Vietnamese waters.
