Nghe an: Sudden whirlwinds and hailstorms have caused heavy damage in several mountainous areas of the central province of Nghe An. On the afternoon of May 3, severe weather conditions led to significant destruction of houses and crops, impacting local communities.
According to Vietnam News Agency, initial reports from Nhan Hoa commune indicate that hail, strong winds, and lightning have resulted in widespread property and agricultural losses. A lightning strike at a local sugar plant resulted in a spillage of around 2,000 tonnes of molasses, causing an estimated financial loss of up to 8 billion VND (303,536 USD). In Thanh Binh Tho commune, the extreme weather conditions have torn off roofs and damaged 193 houses and one community cultural house, with the losses estimated at over 6 billion VND.
Additionally, the Cay Mit bridge, which spans the Con River, was displaced by approximately 30cm from its abutment due to the storm. The agricultural impact is also severe, with more than 112 hectares of rice and 20 hectares of maize suffering over 70% damage. The total agricultural losses are estimated at more than 3.7 billion VND.
