Hanoi: A human chess performance and competition festival took centre stage at Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square on February 21 morning (the fifth day of the Lunar New Year - the Year of the Horse), ushering in the spring with vibrant and festive energy. Unlike traditional Chinese chess, human chess, or live chess, is a form of chess in which people take the place of pieces. It blends strategic gameplay with live performance art. On a life-sized chessboard drawn directly on the square, each piece is portrayed by a person dressed in traditional costume, moving according to the players' commands. Every advance, retreat, attack and defense is expressed through movement and stage presence, creating a vivid cultural tableau in the heart of the Old Quarter.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the event highlighted the unique aspects of Vietnamese culture, drawing both locals and tourists to witness this extraordinary blend of art and strategy. The festival not only celebrated the traditional Vietnamese New Year but also emphasized the importance of cultural preservation in the modern age. The human chess festival served as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam, showcasing the country's ability to maintain traditional practices while engaging with a contemporary audience.
The event was part of a larger series of cultural initiatives aimed at promoting Vietnamese traditions and fostering a sense of community among participants. The human chess game, with its roots deeply embedded in Vietnamese history, provided an interactive platform for cultural exchange and education. Participants and spectators alike were able to appreciate the complexity and beauty of this traditional game, which has been passed down through generations.
In addition to the human chess performances, the festival featured various activities and exhibitions that highlighted other aspects of Vietnamese culture. Visitors had the opportunity to explore traditional crafts, sample local cuisine, and participate in workshops designed to educate and entertain. The festival successfully created a vibrant atmosphere, reflecting the spirit of the Lunar New Year and the rich cultural tapestry of Vietnam.
