Hanoi: Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered the immediate establishment of a rapid response team, led by Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement to impose a 46% reciprocal tariff on certain goods imported from Vietnam. The Government leader on April 3 chaired a meeting between standing cabinet members and leaders of ministries, sectors, and agencies to assess the impact of the US’s new tariff policy and discuss response measures.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the response team’s primary objective is to evaluate the potential economic repercussions of the US tariff hike and devise strategic measures to mitigate any adverse effects on Vietnam’s economy. The team will also engage in diplomatic dialogues with US counterparts to seek a resolution that aligns with the spirit of bilateral cooperation and mutual benefit.
The meeting, which involved key stakeholders from various sectors, emphasized the need for a unified and strategic approach to address the challenges posed by the tariff increase. Discussions also highlighted the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic ties with the United States while protecting Vietnam’s economic interests.
Prime Minister Chinh reiterated the significance of the US-Vietnam trade relationship, urging both nations to work collaboratively towards a solution that respects the principles of free trade and fair competition. The rapid response team is expected to deliver its preliminary findings and recommendations in the coming weeks.
