Quang ngai: A rare sea turtle has been released into the wild at Sa Huynh estuary in the central province of Quang Ngai. The turtle was preliminarily identified as an Olive Ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), a species listed as endangered and strictly protected on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and Vietnam's Red Data Book as it faces ongoing pressures from illegal hunting, marine pollution, and habitat loss. Measuring about 40cm in length and 30cm in width, and weighing roughly 3kg, the animal was found to be in good health.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the release of this rare sea turtle into its natural habitat is part of ongoing conservation efforts to protect the species from threats. The Olive Ridley sea turtle, known for its relatively small size compared to other sea turtles, is a critical component of marine biodiversity. Conservationists emphasize the importance of protecting these animals to ensure the health of marine ecosystems.
Local authorities and conservationists have been working diligently to safeguard the habitats of endangered species like the Olive Ridley. Efforts include monitoring nesting sites, reducing marine pollution, and implementing measures to prevent illegal hunting. The successful release of the turtle highlights the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders in preserving Vietnam's marine life.
