Removal of IUU Fishing ‘Yellow Card’ an Urgent Must-Do: PM

Ho chi minh city: Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has underlined that having the European Commission (EC)’s “yellow card” warning over illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing removed in 2025 and sustainably developing the fisheries sector is an urgent and essential task, one that must be completed without delay. He made the request while chairing the 23rd meeting of the National Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing in Ho Chi Minh City on November 25. The session was held via videoconference connecting the southern city, the Government Office, and 21 coastal provinces and cities.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of addressing the EC’s warning to enhance the reputation of the country’s fisheries sector. The removal of the “yellow card” is crucial for the sustainable growth of the industry, which is a significant contributor to the national economy. The meeting brought together stakeholders from various regions to discuss strategies and measures to combat IUU fishing effectively.

During the session, Prime Minister Chinh called for enhanced coordination among ministries, local authorities, and relevant agencies to ensure strict enforcement of regulations against IUU fishing. He highlighted the need for comprehensive monitoring systems and increased awareness among fishermen about the importance of sustainable fishing practices. The Prime Minister also urged for international cooperation to tackle the issue and restore the country’s image in the global market.
