Vietnam Champions Comprehensive Human Rights Strategy in ASEAN

Kuala lumpur: Promoting and ensuring human rights involve multiple sectors and pillars, requiring a comprehensive approach and enhanced coordination between the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and specialised agencies to optimise resources for human rights cooperation, a Vietnamese official has said. Speaking at the dialogue with the AICHR on July 8, as part of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM-58) and related gatherings in Kuala Lumpur, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son commended the AICHR’s contributions over the past 15 years and expressed confidence in its continued role in advancing the realisation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and other regional cooperation strategies.

According to Vietnam News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Son highlighted the importance of a holistic strategy that brings together various stakeholders to address human rights issues effectively. He emphasized the necessity for AICHR to collaborate with specialised agencies to ensure the efficient utilisation of resources in their efforts to protect and promote human rights across the region.

The dialogue formed a key part of the AMM-58, where ASEAN member states congregated to discuss pressing regional matters, including human rights, economic cooperation, and security. Son’s remarks underscored Vietnam’s commitment to fostering a united ASEAN front that stands firm on the principles of human rights and regional cooperation.

The AICHR, established as part of ASEAN’s efforts to bolster human rights, has been pivotal in shaping policies and frameworks that guide member states in their human rights agenda. Son’s advocacy for comprehensive coordination reflects Vietnam’s proactive stance in supporting AICHR’s mandate and enhancing its effectiveness in the region.
