Vietnam Seeks World Bank Green Credit to Enhance Low-Emission Rice Production

Can tho: Vietnam has called on the World Bank (WB) to provide preferential ‘green credit’ to support mechanisation in agriculture and help cooperatives access funding to produce organic fertiliser from rice straw, thereby advancing the cultivation of high-quality, low-emission rice. The proposal was put forward by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam at a working session in Can Tho on November 27 with Carlos Felipe Jaramillo, WB Vice President for East Asia and the Pacific. The discussion centred on the sustainable development project for one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the initiative aims to enhance Vietnam’s agricultural sustainability by promoting environmentally friendly practices. The proposed green credit is intended to facilitate the transition toward more sustainable rice production, reducing emissions and promoting eco-friendly practices. The discussions highlighted the importance of mechanisation and organic fertiliser production as key components in achieving these goals. The World Bank’s involvement is seen as crucial in providing the necessary financial support to enable these advancements in Vietnam’s agricultural sector.
