Hanoi: Vietnam's tourism sector recorded strong momentum during the New Year 2026 holiday from January 1-4, welcoming an estimated 3.5 million visitors nationwide, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT). Average room occupancy at tourist accommodation facilities reached about 51% nationwide, while several key destinations reported higher rates of around 65%. Seen as an important run-up to the peak tourism season in early 2026, the New Year holiday results underscore the positive impact of visa facilitation and promotion efforts, helping lay the groundwork for the 2026 targets of welcoming 25 million international arrivals and serving 150 million domestic tourists.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the surge in visitor numbers is attributed to a combination of strategic promotional campaigns and enhanced visa policies designed to attract international tourists. The VNAT emphasized the importance of these measures in boosting tourism and contributing to the national economy.
The VNAT also highlighted that the New Year period serves as a critical prelude to the upcoming peak tourism season. By achieving a solid performance during this time, tourism operators and government bodies are optimistic about reaching their ambitious goals for the entire year.
Key destinations such as Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City were among those reporting higher-than-average occupancy rates, reflecting their popularity among both domestic and international tourists. The VNAT remains committed to further developing Vietnam's tourism infrastructure and services to sustain this growth trend.
