New york: Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, has highlighted Vietnam’s substantive contributions to the global ocean agenda and its efforts to advance the implementation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) worldwide. Addressing an annual plenary debate on oceans and the law of the sea held by the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80) on December 8 – 9 in New York, Viet stated that Vietnam made substantive contributions at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) by registering a series of voluntary commitments on sea management, fisheries governance, and marine pollution reduction.
According to Vietnam News Agency, Ambassador Viet emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing ocean-related challenges and the need for comprehensive strategies to ensure sustainable sea management. Vietnam’s commitments are seen as a significant step towards promoting sustainable development and preserving marine resources.
Viet also underscored the crucial role of UNCLOS as the legal framework governing all activities in the oceans and seas. He called for global cooperation in implementing the convention to ensure peace, security, and sustainable development of the oceans. The ambassador reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to working with other nations in safeguarding marine environments and promoting responsible ocean governance on a global scale.
