Hanoi:Vietnam is set to enhance its energy sector with the development of two inter-regional industrial renewable energy centers in the northern and southern regions. These centers will form ecosystems that span the entire value chain, including clean power generation, logistics, and human resources training.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the revised Power Development Plan VIII aims to establish these centers by 2030, integrating renewable energy with industrial and service ecosystems. The centers are expected to include offshore wind power plants, equipment manufacturing, and green industrial parks, with a combined capacity of 2,000-4,000 MW.
The northern center will leverage its developed seaport system and strategic location, while the southern center will focus on its strong offshore wind and solar power potential. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy outlined in Politburo Resolution No. 70-NQ/TW, which aims to ensure national energy security through 2030.
Dr. Pham Quy Ngoc of the Vietnam Petroleum Institute emphasized Vietnam's capabilities in offshore wind power, highlighting existing strengths in steel fabrication and logistics. However, he noted that policy support, including investment incentives, is crucial for further development.
Bui Vinh Thang from the Global Wind Energy Council underscored the need for a clear development roadmap to attract investors. He stressed the importance of policies that encourage domestic industries and supply chains, particularly as Vietnam targets 17GW of offshore wind capacity by 2035.
Assoc. Prof. Dr Nguyen Van Thinh of Hanoi University of Mining and Geology suggested a phased approach for developing these centers, initially focusing on existing capabilities before expanding into areas like green hydrogen and energy storage. He emphasized the importance of creating a complete value chain to support the long-term growth of Vietnam's renewable energy sector.
