Pandemic containment goal must be met: PM

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has reiterated Vietnam’s resolve to suppress the devastating COVID-19 pandemic.

“As we carry out social distancing at the expense of economic growth, we must achieve the goal of containing the pandemic as early as possible,” Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh told a teleconference on Sunday.

The PM, who also heads the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, chaired the meeting with localities where social distancing is currently in place.

Since the fourth wave of COVID-18 began in Vietnam on April 27, the country has recorded 419,617 cases, according to the meeting. 8 localities have gone through 14 straight days without new cases and only Cao Bang province has stayed free from coronavirus.

Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long said Ho Chi Minh city and neighboring Binh Duong province continue to record a high number of new COVID-19 cases with half of them being locally transmitted.

Infections are expected to rise in the coming days as a result of mass testing, he said.

Mr. Long noted the pandemic has eased in other localities in the southern region as a gradual decline of community cases has been reported. COVID-19 is currently under control in Hanoi in the north and Da Nang, Khanh Hoa, and Phu Yen in the central region, but the risk of new outbreaks remains, he warned.

PM Chinh said as COVID-19 remains unpredictable, it is necessary to get prepared for living with and adapting to the pandemic, while continuing with drastic measures to bring the pandemic under control so as to shift focus on political and socio-economic development tasks.

He said social distancing must be enforced seriously and strictly to make use of this period to rapidly conduct testing and vaccination in a scientific, effective, and comprehensive manner.

Iran denounces US threat

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani on Saturday rebuffed US President Joe Biden’s recent statement on Iran’s nuclear issue.

Shamkhani said on Twitter that Biden’s mention of “other options” to be used against Iran “if diplomacy fails” is an “illegal threat.”

Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett in White House talks on Friday that he was putting “diplomacy first” to try to rein in Iran’s nuclear program but that if negotiations fail he would be prepared to turn to other unspecified options.

US-Iran talks have stalled as Washington awaits the next move by Iran’s new president.

Vietnam scores high in employee experience

Vietnamese small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) scored an average of 92% in employee experience, 8% higher than other countries in the region, a study has found.

The employee experience survey was conducted by Willis Towers Watson and SME Magazine across Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia to help SMEs better understanding their employees’ perspectives and to raise awareness of the importance of developing strong employee experience.

“Our data shows that the ability to build trust and belief within a company is largely driven by how connected employees feel towards their leaders,” said Yeo Ooi Keong, practice leader and organizational psychologist at Willis Towers Watson.

The study found that SMEs’ employees are generally proud of their companies as they trust the vision of their leaders and understand how their work contributed to broader goals. Hence, 80 percent of respondents are willing to recommend their company as a good place to work.

At the end of last year, 38 Vietnamese SMEs were honored at the SME Magazine’s SME100 Fast Moving Companies Awards.

The SME100 Awards utilizes a basket of quantitative and qualitative criteria with a focus on growth and resilience to identify and recognize the top performing SMEs in the region.
