Publishing Startup Reedsy Introduces Directory of Top Publishers in the US, UK, and More

LONDON, Aug. 30, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Publishing startup Reedsy announced today the launch of their book publishers directory, which lists over 450 vetted publishers in the US, UK, Canada, India, Australia, and other countries worldwide.

The directory includes small presses, mid-size publishing houses, and Big Five publishers to serve the needs of any author. Interested parties can sort by genre — with over 50 genres to choose from in both fiction and nonfiction — as well as additional keywords and whether that publisher accepts unagented submissions. If seeking a publisher in a certain region, they can select any major city from the countries available, then filter for conditions within that city.

This directory was designed to make it easier for authors to target their ideal publishers. “For every author, there is an optimal publishing route,” says Reedsy CEO Emmanuel Nataf. “We aim to make that route as smooth as possible. Firstly, we have our marketplace services to help authors get their books into fighting shape. Now this directory will help traditionally publishing authors find the perfect home for those books, whether that’s a small press or a big publisher.”

Individual info boxes on each publisher also provide relevant information. “Authors will be able to find everything they need to know about each publisher in our directory,” says Nataf. “All the relevant information is right there.” These entries include each publisher’s location, estimated size, book genres and formats accepted, best-known titles, and where to submit. While browsing, authors can “Save” their favorite publishers to a shortlist that will be emailed to them.

Reedsy also recently launched a literary agents directory, which lists over 600 professional agents working across all literary genres and locations. Perhaps most crucially, the agents directory allows authors to filter for agents who are “interested in debut authors”: first-time authors who want to submit to publishers that only accept agented submissions can begin querying suitable agents right away.

Between these directories and the plentiful other resources that Reedsy provides, every author can embark on that optimal publishing journey in no time. “No matter how you wish to publish,” Nataf says, “With Reedsy, you are in reliable hands.”

HCM City allows shippers to operate in COVID-19 “red zones” from Monday

Ho Chi Minh City has allowed shippers to resume operations in eight COVID-19 “red zones” under certain conditions from Monday.

The decision is part of efforts to ensure the supply of food and necessities for local residents during social distancing. Shippers can operate in eight red zones of Thu Duc city, Districts 8 and 12, Binh Tan, Binh Thanh, Binh Chanh and Hoc Mon districts.

The shippers must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and carry a negative rapid COVID-19 test certificate. They will receive COVID-19 testing once a day in the early morning.

Shippers operating in the remaining 14 district should also receive at least one shot of COVID-19 vaccine and show their negative testing result, which is valid in two days.

The municipal People’s Commitee has asked the Public Security Department to issue about 20,000 travel permits to workers in retail sector to ensure goods supply for locals.

HCM City has been the largest COVID-19 hotspot in the country, with over 200,000 cases reported so far.

Hanoi tightens COVID-19 control amid rising infections

Hanoi authorities have required departments, sectors and localities across the city to intensify testing and tracing to filter COVID-19 patients out of the community, while preparing quarantine and treatment facilities to be ready for any circumstances.

According to the city Department of Health, the capital city recorded 133 new infections on Sunday, including 4 found in the community.

After three employees of the Agriculture General Hospital got COVID-19 on Sunday, the hospital was locked down to test more than 1,000 staff members and patients. Notifications and guidance have been sent to those who have visited the hospital from August 14-28.

The same day, a concentrated quarantine facility with a capacity of 500 people opened in Kim Giang ward of Thanh Xuan district. It will operate until the pandemic is stamped out.

Meanwhile, Hanoi has offered financial aid worth 33 million USD to 2.3 million disadvantaged households and people who are struggling to make ends meet because of COVID-19. Three quarters of the total were sourced from the State and local budget while the remainder was funded by the private sector.

Particularly, more than 80,000 informal workers across the city have received assistance worth over 5 million USD.

“Zero dong” stores support pandemic-hit people in Hanoi

Two “zero dong” mini marts have opened in Hanoi’s Thanh Xuan and Hoai Duc districts to help pandemic-hit people surmount difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

They are part of a campaign jointly organised by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU) and the Association of Vietnamese Students of Hanoi, Sao Do entrepreneurs club, and Phu Nhuan Jewelry.

Each family will be given a voucher worth 400,000 VND (17.6 USD) and a representative will go to the mini marts to buy essential goods on fixed dates and time so as to ensure pandemic rules.

The stores will serve up to 200 customers per day, supplying rice, noodles, milk, vegetables, and face masks, among others, of clear origin and prices.

As of August 25, eleven stores of its kind had been rolled out across the city.

IAEA concerned by apparent nuclear reactor restart in North Korea

North Korea appears to have restarted activities at its main plutonium-producing reactor in Yongbyon, the UN atomic agency IAEA said in its annual report.

The IAEA has not had access to that or any other nuclear facilities in North Korea since its inspectors were expelled in 2009.

The agency says it monitors nuclear activities there largely through satellite imagery.

Since early July, “there have been indications, including the discharge of cooling water, consistent with the operation of the reactor,” said the IAEA.

Rockets target US troops as Afghanistan withdrawal enters final stage

US anti-missile defences intercepted as many as five rockets that were fired at Kabul’s airport early on Monday morning, a US official said, as the United States rushed to complete its withdrawal from Afghanistan to end its longest war.

US and allied forces are set to complete their withdrawal by Tuesday to meet a deadline agreed with the Taliban.

Afghan media reports said Monday’s rocket attack was mounted from the back of a vehicle. According to Pajhwok news agency several rockets struck different parts of the Afghan capital.

Initial reports did not indicate any US casualties from the latest rocket attack, the US official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

A White House statement said US President Joe Biden reconfirmed his order that commanders do “whatever is necessary to protect our forces on the ground”, after being briefed on the attack, and he was informed that operations continued uninterrupted at the airport.

On Sunday, a US drone strike killed a suicide car bomber who Pentagon officials said was preparing to attack the airport on behalf of ISIS-K, a local affiliate of Islamic State that is an enemy of both the West and the Taliban.
