Hanoi: The southernmost province of Ca Mau is taking significant steps to address the pressing issue of erosion along its coastlines, riverbanks, and residential areas. The local authorities are working towards a goal of curbing this environmental challenge by the year 2030, as the impacts of climate change continue to intensify.
According to Vietnam News Agency, Ca Mau aims to complete the mitigation of erosion along its western coast, critical areas on its eastern coast, and major rivers by 2030. By 2035, the province plans to make substantial progress in managing erosion along the eastern coast, major rivers, and hotspots within residential areas. Ca Mau's geographical position at Vietnam's southernmost tip, with a coastline spanning approximately 310 kilometers, contributes to its vulnerability. Currently, over 200 kilometers of this coastline are affected by erosion, compounded by the province's low-lying terrain, susceptibility to two tidal regimes, weak geological foundations, and an extensive network of rivers and canals, which heighten the risks of flooding and landslides.
