EGAT’s large dam helps to delay water and alleviate flooding.

EGAT joins in monitoring the flood situation in the North. Bhumibol Dam and Sirikit Dam can still receive water. They are adjusting the plan to reduce water discharge and manage water to reduce the impact on the people. Mr. Chavalit Kankham, Assistant Governor for Renewable Energy Power Generation, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), revealed that from the flood situation in the upper northern region, including Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan and Phrae, which was caused by a moderate to strong monsoon trough passing through the upper part of the northern region, causing the average rainfall to be higher than normal and continuous rainfall from August 15-21, 2024, at present, even though the rainfall has begun to subside, it is still necessary to monitor the mass of water that is still flowing in various river basins. EGAT has been closely monitoring water management and the flood situation in the northern region. For the water situation in the Bhumibol Dam as of August 24, 2024, the water volume i n the reservoir is 5,846.02 million cubic meters, accounting for 43.4 percent of the reservoir capacity. The Sirikit Dam has adjusted its plan to reduce water discharge to 3 million cubic meters per day to reduce the impact on people in the lower river basin and to benefit the storage of water for use during the dry season next year. It has been instructed to closely monitor and follow the situ ation, including integrating water management with relevant agencies to reduce the impact and alleviate the suffering in the flood-stricken areas.
