Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Cause Significant Damage in Vietnam’s Northern and Central Provinces

Hanoi: Heavy rain and severe thunderstorms, accompanied by whirlwinds and lightning, have caused extensive damage across various localities in Vietnam. As of 15:30 on May 17, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment’s Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority reported widespread disruption.

According to Vietnam News Agency, torrential rain in Ly Quoc commune, located in the northern Cao Bang province, led to the flooding of 130 hectares of rice fields, 50 hectares of corn, 24.9 hectares of soybeans, 6.17 hectares of peanuts, and 30 hectares of industrial crops. Meanwhile, in the central Thanh Hoa province, fierce winds and high waves resulted in the anchors of two fishing vessels being snapped, causing them to sink near the estuary in Ngoc Son ward.

The adverse weather conditions have raised concerns among local authorities and residents about the potential long-term impacts on agriculture and fishing industries in the affected areas. Efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage and to provide support to those affected.
