Hanoi: More than 1,300 sets of fallen soldiers' remains have been recovered so far, including those from three mass graves, during the first 111 days of the nationwide 500-day campaign to accelerate the search for, recovery, and identification of war martyrs. The campaign focuses on five major objectives: recovering remains of about 7,000 martyrs; collecting samples from around 230,000 unidentified graves at martyrs' cemeteries; conducting DNA testing on approximately 18,000 sets of remains; establishing a genetic database of relatives of unidentified martyrs; and completing unexploded ordnance clearance in key former battlefields, including Vi Xuyen in Tuyen Quang province, and Lao Cai and Lang Son provinces.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the campaign is a significant effort to honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives. The initiative aims to bring closure to families by identifying and returning the remains of their loved ones. The project also emphasizes the importance of clearing unexploded ordnance to ensure safety in former battle zones. The campaign's progress highlights the dedication to achieving these goals and the commitment to preserving the memory of fallen soldiers.
