Hanoi: Legislators, at their August 23 sitting during the 16th National Assembly (NA)'s first extraordinary session, passed three laws related to national defence, security and State compensation, strengthening the legal framework for preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, building a streamlined and modern military, and protecting the rights of those seeking State compensation. With 473 of 474 participating deputies voting in favour, or 94.6%, the NA passed the Law on Prevention and Combating the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction. The 36-article law, comprising four chapters, will take effect on July 1, 2027.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the passage of these laws marks a significant step in fortifying the nation's legal infrastructure to address pressing issues in national defence and security. The legislation aims to enhance the country's capability to manage and respond to threats posed by weapons of mass destruction while ensuring a modernized military structure. Additionally, the new laws seek to safeguard citizens' rights in matters of State compensation, providing a more robust legal recourse for individuals seeking redress from the government.
