‘New Year Thunder Festival’ Recognised as National Intangible Heritage

Nghe an: The unique ‘New Year Thunder Festival’ of the O Du ethnic group in Nga My commune, Nghe An province, has been officially recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This recognition, announced on June 27, highlights the festival’s cultural significance and its role in preserving the traditions of the O Du people.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the ‘New Year Thunder Festival’ has been a major celebration for the O Du ethnic group for around 100 years. The festival features rituals that are deeply rooted in the cultural identity of the O Du people. In their spiritual beliefs, the first sound of thunder in spring signifies the beginning of the New Year. Upon hearing this sound, the community gathers to hold the festival, praying for peace in the village, favorable weather, bountiful harvests, and good health for all.
