Phuket Governor announces end of search after finding 13th missing person in mudslide

The Phuket governor announced the end of the search after finding all the bodies of those missing from the mudslide, resulting in 13 deaths. He also ordered relevant sectors to provide assistance to those affected by the incident and to resolve the area as soon as possible.

Mr. Sopon Suwannarat, Governor of Phuket Province, revealed that the continuous heavy rain from the night of August 22, 2024 to the morning of August 23, 2024 resulted in mudslides in the area of ????Kata Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phuket, resulting in injuries and deaths, and many affected households. He has ordered the rescue team and officials to urgently search for the missing persons, recover the bodies of the deceased, and provide assistance to those affected as soon as possible.

Mr. Sopon continued that from the operation to help search for the missing and deceased by using the national search and rescue dog K9 to join the search, the search team was able to summarize the total number of dead at 13, consisting of 5 males and 8
females, including 2 Thai women from Surat Thani and Sakon Nakhon provinces, 2 Russians who were a married couple, and 9 Myanmar workers, consisting of 4 males and 4 females. There were 19 injured people and 209 households were affected in 3 sub-districts and 9 villages. He held a meeting to summarize the results of the rescue and announced the end of the search for the missing bodies from the mudslide incident because there were no additional missing persons reported. As for the 2 Thais who died, their relatives have already contacted to receive the bodies for religious rites. As for the foreigners, the officers are summarizing the search situation to provide details to verify the identities of the individuals in order to notify the embassy/consulate to notify the relatives of the deceased to contact to receive the bodies.

‘In this regard, I have ordered the officials to provide assistance and compensation to those affected by the incident as soon as possible. As for the deceased foreigners, the local embas
sy and consulate should be contacted to reach an understanding and provide assistance according to the process. As for the Myanmar workers, I have assigned the provincial labor office to check their employment information and coordinate with business operators (employers) to follow up on providing assistance as much as possible. I have also assigned the Phuket Provincial Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC) to urgently investigate the insurance of those affected. If it is eligible for assistance, it should be done as quickly as possible to alleviate the suffering of those affected as much as possible,’ Mr. Sophon added.

Mr. Sopon Suwannarat, Governor of Phuket Province, said at the end that for the area remediation to return to normal (Big cleaning), Phuket Province has integrated all sectors of the network, along with volunteer citizens, starting from today (August 24, 2024) by bringing in heavy machinery, hydraulic excavators to adjust the landslide area to return to normal. Then, the area will be deve
loped, cleaned, and the households affected by the landslide will be restored, and the area will be returned to normal for the people to continue their lives. Phuket Province will continue to remediate the area for another 2-3 days. As for the relief for disaster victims and repairing affected houses, Phuket Province has ordered Karon Subdistrict Municipality to urgently survey the damaged households to summarize the information and provide assistance as soon as possible. The Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office and Mueang Phuket District will facilitate, assist, and closely monitor the operations. –
