Hanoi: Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmo laid wreaths at the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, and the monument to war heroes and martyrs in Hanoi on June 8, as part of the Timor-Leste PM's official visit to Vietnam and attendance at the third ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) 2026.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the visit by Prime Minister Gusmo highlights the strengthening ties between Timor-Leste and Vietnam. The gesture of laying wreaths is seen as a mark of respect and acknowledgment of the historical significance of President Ho Chi Minh and the sacrifices of Vietnamese martyrs.
Prime Minister Gusmo's visit to Vietnam is not only symbolic but also strategic, as Timor-Leste seeks to deepen its engagement with ASEAN nations. The ASEAN Future Forum 2026 serves as a platform for member countries to discuss future-oriented policies and regional cooperation.
The participation of Timor-Leste in such forums is critical as the country aspires to become a full member of ASEAN. This visit, therefore, represents a step towards achieving that goal while fostering bilateral relations with Vietnam.
