Hanoi: UNESCO and the Japanese Government have signed an agreement to initiate a project focused on enhancing Vietnam's early warning capabilities, disaster risk mitigation, and ensuring a safe learning environment. The project, funded with 533,333 USD, is set to run from March 2026 to March 2027, targeting Nghe An province, an area frequently affected by natural disasters. Nghe An is not only home to the UNESCO-recognized Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve but also includes Vinh city, a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the project aims to benefit approximately 15,000 people, including local communities, students, teachers, and school administrators, while also providing indirect advantages on a broader scale. The insights gained from this initiative will serve as valuable references for other regions and at the national level. This effort is in line with Vietnam's priorities in disaster management and educational reform, supporting global commitments under the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Sustainable Development Goals.
