Vietnam Promotes Cooperation to Ensure Maritime Safety and Security

New york: Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu has underscored that ensuring maritime safety, security, and freedom not only helps maintain peace, stability, and order at sea but also underpins trade, energy security, food security, and global economic stability. With nearly 90% of global goods transported by sea, keeping vital shipping lanes open is essential to peace and sustainable development across all regions, the official, who was head of the Vietnamese delegation to the 36th Meeting of States Parties to UNCLOS (SPLOS 36) in New York on June 16, said while chairing a symposium on the sidelines of SPLOS 36, which drew more than 120 representatives from various countries and international organisations, as well as scholars and experts from across the world.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the symposium focused on exploring collaborative measures to enhance maritime safety and security, reflecting Vietnam's proactive stance in addressing global maritime issues. Nguyen Minh Vu emphasized the need for international cooperation and dialogue to effectively manage and protect maritime resources, highlighting the critical role that the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) plays in establishing a legal framework for maritime governance.

The meeting provided a platform for sharing insights and strategies on safeguarding maritime routes, which are crucial for the transportation of goods and services worldwide. Participants discussed innovative approaches to tackle challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing, and environmental threats, aiming to foster a secure and resilient maritime environment.
