ABU DHABI, Arab Emirates, May 16, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Agthia Group PJSC, one of the region’s leading food and beverage companies, announced today that its quarterly net revenues surpassed AED 1 billion in Q1 2022 for the first time since its inception, registering a 58% year-on-year growth.

Group net profit attributable to shareholders was AED 82 million for the quarter, a 64% increase relative to Q1 2021. The quarter was the first when the performance of all five acquisitions made in 2021 were consolidated and reflected on the Group’s financial statements.

Khalifa Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of Agthia Group, said: “Agthia’s first quarter results for 2022 are indicative of the hard work throughout the previous year to acquire and consolidate value-accretive brands that complement our existing portfolio of companies. This achievement is just the beginning of our mission to build a more holistic, efficient, and integrated business model after successfully rounding out the first year of our five-year strategy.”

Alan Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Agthia Group, said: “In the first quarter of 2022, our attention was focused primarily on the seamless integration of the entities acquired in 2021. Despite the ongoing fluidity of market conditions and a challenging global inflationary environment, we are steadfast in continuing Agthia’s journey of transformation. We see significant headroom to grow further as we continue to pursue full integration as a top priority in 2022 and we remain firmly on-track to deliver against our five-year strategic roadmap.”

From a financial perspective, Agthia’s consumer business division achieved substantial growth of 83% compared to the previous year, now encompassing 75% of total group sales.

  • The Protein & Frozen segment contributed AED 294 million to the top-line, driven by the consolidation of Nabil Foods and Atyab in the quarter.
  • Snacking added AED 255 million to the top-line, driven by the first quarter inclusion of BMB Group, Al Foah and Al Faysal Bakery & Sweets.

Vietnam, Cambodia hold first border defence exchange

Vietnam and Cambodia held the first border defence exchange in the border areas of Loc Ninh district of the former’s Binh Phuoc province and Snuol district of the latter’s Kratie province on May 15.

Co-chairing the event, Vietnamese Minister of National Defence Gen. Phan Van Giang and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Samdech Pichay Sena Tea Banh saluted Border Marker No. 69, planted friendship trees, witnessed a joint patrol, cut the ribbon to open a military – civilian medical centre in Loc Ninh, and visited two primary schools in the districts.

At the following talks, Giang said this was the first border defence friendship exchange between the two countries at the ministerial level. It became even more meaningful as 2022 is the two countries’ Friendship Year and marks the 55th founding anniversary of their diplomatic ties (June 24) and the 45th anniversary of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s path to topple the Pol Pot genocidal regime (June 20).

The two sides affirmed that braving difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the complex international and regional situation, the Vietnam – Cambodia relations, including defence ties, have still been thriving.

The countries have been actively and effectively implementing the cooperation activities agreed on at their talks in Phnom Penh in December 2021 while fruitfully working together to share information, maintain security and social order and safety in border areas, assist each other in the COVID-19 fight and training personnel.

This has helped enhance mutual understanding and trust, promote their friendship and all-round connections, and defeat hostile forces’ plots to drive a wedge into the Vietnam – Cambodia solidarity, according to the officials.

For the time ahead, they agreed to increase coordination in implementing the five-year defence cooperation protocol and annual cooperation plans; boost all-level mutual visits; hold defence policy dialogues at the deputy minister level; strengthen ties between the countries’ military regions, arms, services, and defence forces; cooperate in political education; and support each other at regional and international forums.

Minister Giang affirmed the Vietnamese ministry’s consistent support for Cambodia to successfully fulfill its role as the ASEAN Chair in 2022.

He expressed his hope that Cambodian leaders at all levels will create favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community in the country to settle down and help Vietnamese firms, including his ministry’s businesses, to operate successfully in Cambodia.

After the talks, the two ministers witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Border Guard High Command of Vietnam and Cambodia’s Royal Gendarmerie High Command.

The two countries share 1,137km of land border that runs across 10 provinces of Vietnam and nine provinces of Cambodia./.

First Vietnamese woman reaches summit of Mount Everest

Nguyen Thi Thanh Nha, also known as Celine Nha Nguyen, has become the first Vietnamese woman to conquer the summit of Mount Everest, according to Nepal-based mountaineering company Seven Summit Treks.

A representative from the company congratulated her and highlighted that she is the first Vietnamese woman to reach the summit of Everest, noting that this is a historic achievement for the Vietnamese climbing community.

Nha, a lawyer from Ho Chi Minh City, aspires to conquer the ‘Seven Summits’ – the seven highest mountains in the world.

In January this year, she successfully conquered Vinson Massif, which stands at a height of 4,892 metres, the highest peak in Antarctica. It was challenging for her to hike uphill in the bitter weather while carrying a 70-litre pack.

It is expected that Nha and her climbing team will return to base camp on May 17, after descending the mountain.

According to The Himalayan Database’s latest list, as of December 2021, only three Vietnamese men have successfully ascended Mount Everest.

Everest is the world’s tallest mountain, 8,848.86 metres above sea level. After the Nepal earthquake on April 25, 2015, the mountain has lost 2.4cm in height and relocated 3cm to the southwest. This mountain straddles the boundary between China and Nepal./.
