Lawmakers scrutinise implementation of planning-related policies, laws

National Assembly (NA) deputies exchanged views on the implementation of policies and laws related to the planning work on May 30 during the 15th NA’s third session.

The legislature spent the whole working day on supreme supervision. The sitting was broadcast live on TV and radio channels.

Chairman of the NA Economic Committee Vu Hong Thanh delivered a report detailing the legislative body’s supervision over the implementation of planning-related policies and laws since the Law on Planning took effect.

During the discussion, 39 deputies contributed their opinions, and one lawmaker debated, most of them agreed with the report of the NA’s supervision group.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha, Minister of Construction Nguyen Thanh Nghi, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, and Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung discussed concerned issues.

On May 31, NA deputies are scheduled to discuss in the hall a number of contents with different opinions of the draft Law on amendments and supplements to a number of articles of the Law on Intellectual Property in the morning, and discuss in groups the draft Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control (amended) and the draft Law on Implementing Democracy at the grassroots level./../.

Virtual workshop seeks ways to facilitate Vietnam’s aquatic exports to RCEP markets

A virtual conference looking to bolster shipments of Vietnam’s aquatic products to member nations of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is being held on May 30 and 31.

The event aims to support localities, firms and cooperatives nationwide to capitalise on RCEP preferences so as to seek partners and business opportunities as well as bolster exports to the RCEP members.

It is arranged by the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (VIETRADE) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade together with Trade Offices at Embassies of Vietnam in the RCEP countries.

Virtual trading sessions between Vietnamese businesses and their counterparts from the RCEP members are expected to promote products and seek potential customers.

Vietnamese firms are advised to take the initiative in getting accustomed, conquering markets and turning challenges into chances.

They need to study origin tracing regulations, as well as fulfil sanitary and phytosanitary measures and technical trade barriers.

VIETRADE Deputy Director Le Hoang Tai said Vietnam has exported aquatic products to more than 160 markets worldwide, of which shipments to the RCEP signatories account for 63 percent.

Nguyen Manh Dong from the Vietnam Trade Office in Japan said that Vietnam shipped aquatic products worth 1.33 billion USD to Japan last year, making up 74 percent of agro-forestry-aquatic product products to the East Asian market.

In the first five months of 2022, Vietnam’s aquatic exports raked in about 4.5 billion USD, posting a year-on-year surge of more than 44.5 percent./.

Top legislator receives British Ambassador to Vietnam

National Assembly (NA) Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue hosted a reception in Hanoi on May 30 for British Ambassador to Vietnam Gareth Ward.

Ambassador Gareth congratulated Vietnam on overcoming difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as its socio-economic activities have returned to normal. Recently, Vietnam successfully organised the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) – the largest regional sport event, which demonstrates the recovery of Vietnam in particular and other countries in the region in general.

NA Chairman Hue thanked the diplomat for his contributions to boosting the Vietnam-UK strategic partnership.

He stressed that since the two countries established the strategic partnership in 2010, the bilateral relationship has been increasingly developing. Both sides have coordinated in effectively implementing bilateral cooperation mechanisms, maintained coordination at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations and its Security Council, and within the framework of the Asia – Europe Meeting (ASEM) and ASEAN – UK.

He also appreciated the fine developments in the cooperation between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the British Parliament over the past years. The two sides have maintained delegation exchanges at all levels, as well as meetings and consultations at multilateral parliamentary forums, especially at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership (ASEP).

Emphasising that the effective cooperation between the two legislative bodies is an important factor contributing to further promoting the Vietnam – UK Strategic Partnership, Hue showed his wish that Ambassador Gareth will continue to act as a bridge strengthening the bilateral ties, and propose cooperation activities towards the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2023.

Gareth said the British Government appreciates Vietnam’s commitment at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) and its orientations for sustainable and green development.

He stressed the potential for cooperation between the two legislatures in such areas as improving transparency in public governance, building a legal framework for the digital economy, and developing high technology./.

Trips bringing OVs to Truong Sa strengthen national solidarity: Front official

The annual programme which arranges trips bringing overseas Vietnamese to Truong Sa islands helps strengthen national solidarity, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee Phung Khanh Tai said on May 30.

He made the statement while presiding over a get-together with OVs from 17 countries around the world, who paid a visit to Truong Sa islands from May 17-25.

The OVs’ recent trip was the first one after a two-year suspension due to the negative impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic and 2022 also marks the 10th year of the programme.

Tai spoke highly of efforts made by the State Commission for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs and the Vietnam People’s Navy High Command in organising the annual programme, which contributes to affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over Truong Sa islands and southern continental shelf.

Underlining that OVs are an inseparable part of the country, he pledged that the VFF Central Committee will spare no efforts to consolidate the national solidarity, calling on the OVs to further support the country’s aspirations./.

Golden Gate Ventures assists startups in Vietnam

Golden Gate Ventures on May 30 signed a cooperation agreement with the National Innovation Centre (NIC), aiming at strengthening long-term relationship, and supporting the development of the startup and innovation ecosystem in Vietnam.

The agreement was inked within the framework of the workshop themed “Golden Startup Triangle in Southeast Asia: Vietnam – Singapore – Indonesia” organised by the NIC.

With this deal, Golden Gate Ventures will increase investment in the market, promote exchanges, develop new ideas and innovations, and act as a catalyst to support Vietnam’s startups in building a position in the region.

Currently, the investment fund has established representative offices in Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia, affirming that this is the “Golden Triangle of Startups” in Southeast Asia.

Many delegates to the workshop said that Vietnam has become a “new gem” of the region when it rises to the top of the rankings along with leading regional countries such as Singapore and Indonesia with a record high investment of 1.4 billion USD poured into Vietnamese start-ups in 2021 – the year when the country was heavily affected by the COVD-19 pandemic.

NIC Director Vu Quoc Huy said that in the first four months of 2022, the number of newly-established enterprises in Vietnam increased by 12.3 percent over the same period last year and by 31.9 percent over that of the previous two years.

Golden Gate Ventures is a venture capital fund in Southeast Asia founded by Silicon Valley natives. Since 2011, the firm has launched four funds, managed 250 million USD AUM, and invested in over 60 companies.

To support startups and innovation in Vietnam, the fund announced the launch of two new offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City./.
