SEA Games 31: Vietnamese pair pocket bronze in men’s tennis doubles

Vietnam’s Trinh Linh Giang and Pham Minh Tuan secured bronze in the men’s tennis doubles at SEA Games 31 on May 20.

They lost in the semifinal in Bac Ninh province 4-6, 2-6 to Ruben Gonzales and Treat Huey of the Philippines.

Vietnam’s tennis hopes now lie on Le Quoc Khanh, Nguyen Van Phuong, Ly Hoang Nam and Trinh Linh Giang.

Khanh and Phuong will face Francis Casey Alcantara and Jeson Patrombon of the Philippines in the other men’s doubles semifinals. Meanwhile, Nam and Giang will face Thai and Lao rivals in the men’s singles semifinals./.

Deputy Finance Minister Nguyen Duc Chi takes charge of State Securities Commission

Minister of Finance Ho Duc Phoc had assigned Deputy Finance Minister Nguyen Duc Chi to directly take the charge of the State Securities Commission (SSC) from May 19.

In a dispatch to the SSC, Minister Phoc stated that Deputy Minister Chi will manage the commission during the consideration and completion of personnel for the commission.

Earlier on May 18, the Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission announced the inspection conclusions and Party disciplinary measures on the SSC Party Committee in the 2015-2020 tenure and relevant individuals. Right after that, the Ministry of Finance directed the SSC, stock exchanges, the Vietnam Securities Depository and relevant agencies to review and implement measures to remedy the violations and shortcomings.

Specifically, the ministry dismissed Tran Van Dung from the position of the Chairman of the SSC, while giving a warning to Vu Bang, former Secretary of the SSC Party Committee in the 2015-2020 tenure and former SSC Chairman.

Warnings were given to Nguyen Thanh Long, Secretary of the Hanoi Stock Exchange Party Committee; and Nguyen Son, Chairman of the management board of the Vietnam Securities Depository for their wrongdoings during their working time./.

International seminar discusses smart city building in Da Nang

An international workshop titled ‘Smart city: Experiences from some countries in western and northern Europe and Da Nang’s vision’ took place in the central coastal city of Da Nang on May 20, gathering experts and representatives of embassies, consulates general, trade associations and foreign businesses.

In her remarks, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations, said the central economic hub boasts infrastructure, services and management levels that meet for smart city levels.

Local authorities and people are also determined to press ahead with the process, she noted.

The workshop introduced Vietnam’s policies for smart city development and Da Nang’s plans to accelerate the local process.

Presentations on smart infrastructure and management by speakers from Austria, the Netherlands and Ireland, among others, were tabled.

Concluding the event, Ho Ky Minh, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, said Da Nang will take into account and the study models and solutions presented.

The official affirmed that the city hopes embassies of western and northern European countries will call on businesses and investors to visit Da Nang and help local firms to expand their markets and bring Vietnam’s digital solutions overseas./.

SEA Games 31: U23 Thailand receive big bonus after beating Indonesia

Thailand’s U23 team has been awarded a bonus after making it to the final of the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31), said Nualphan Lamsam, manager of the men’s U23 team of Thailand.

Thailand secured their place in the final by defeating Indonesia 1-0 in an intense match on May 19. The team will play U23 Vietnam who also secured a 1-0 victory over Malaysia.

Nualphan said Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn watched the match at Thien Truong Stadium.

Impressed with their efforts, he decided to award 1 million THB (about 29,000 USD) as a bonus.

Earlier, Nualphan pledged to give a 5-million THB bonus to players if they win the gold at the Games, which does not include a bonus from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT).

According to SAT, athletes who win gold, silver and bronze medals at SEA Games 31 will be awarded 300,000 THB, 150,000 THB and 75,000 THB, respectively.

The final will take place on May 22 at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi./.
