Vietnam women’s football team determined to defend title

The women’s football team of Vietnam are aiming to defend their title at the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 31, said coach Mai Duc Chung, according to the national SEA Games 31 organising committee.

Speaking at a press conference on May 8, Chung said the squad have been appreciated by experts and fans.

He expressed his pleasure that more and more teams are attending the women’s football, noting that even Cambodia and Malaysia have prepared well for the regional event.

This is helping the women’s game develop, he said, adding that rivals Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines and Myanmar have invested and trained hard for the Games, so Vietnam must be well-prepared.

Notably, Thailand and Myanmar lost to Vietnam at the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, and lost the ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup’s finals.

The Vietnamese squad will do their best to meet their goal of winning gold in the spirit of fair play, Chung said.

The Vietnamese squad will meet strong opponents from the Philippines in the first match, but coach Chung said that he is not worried.

“We are ready and well prepared for the match against the Philippines,” he said.

Disciplinary warning given to former Can Tho official

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on May 9 signed a decision on disciplinary action against Vo Thanh Thong, former chairman of the People’s Committee of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho in the 2016-2021 tenure.

In Decision No. 558/QD-TTg, the PM decided to issue a disciplinary warning to Thong, who is also Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, due to violations and shortcomings during his term.

The Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission has applied Party discipline enforcement against Thong from January 19, 2022.

Vietnam attends 18th congress of World Federation of Trade Unions in Italy

A delegation of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) attended the 18th congress of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) that took place in Rome, Italy, from May 6 to 8.

Opening the event that was participated by 435 delegates from 106 countries, WFTU General Secretary Georges Mavrikos highlighted the federation’s strong development in both quantity and quality over the past years, noting that since 2005, the WFTU membership has surged by 175 percent to over 105 million in 133 countries, making it the world’s largest organisation of trade unions.

He also highly valued Vietnam’s active contributions to maintaining and strengthening the WFTU’s pioneer role in the fight for the interests of workers around the world.

In his speech, VGCL President Nguyen Dinh Khang stressed the importance of solidarity and unanimity in the progressive working class and global trade unions.

The WFTU formation and development is a vivid demonstration of workers’ solidarity so as to build a world of peace, stability, equality, friendship, cooperation, and common development, he noted, adding to that end, the VGCL will always be an active and responsible member and stand side by side with other WFTU member organisations.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the VGCL has focused on assisting pandemic-hit workers, proposing aid packages and priority policies for frontline medical workers, stepping up vaccination, and ensuring the delivery of insurance benefits, thereby affirming trade unions’ role and sense of responsibility towards members and workers.

In addition, the VGCL has also actively supported the WFTU’s call for engagement in international activities against the pandemic, according to Khang.

The 18th WFTU congress was the second of its kind to be held in Italy, after the first in 1949.

During the event, participants discussed issues related to the difficulties facing the working class worldwide amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict.

Campaign launched for plastic-free SEA Games 31

Seagamesnoplastic and #Greensport are the hashtags of a campaign launched during the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) to raise public awareness of environmental protection, according to the Organising Board.

The drive is jointly held by the communications centre at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) and the Vietnam Sports Administration.

It is intended to reduce the use of single-use plastic products and nylon bags at meetings, training venues, matches and other sites for athletes, delegates and journalists, and activities within the biggest regional sport event.

The rule of 3R – reduce, reuse and recycle – has been promoted as part of the communication activities in the campaign.

The media and social networks have been utilised to spread the message of environmental protection through articles.

Notably, special dustbins are designed and set up at stadiums and gymnasiums. Collected waste will be classified, recycled and treated in line with regulations.

Various souvenirs like key rings and handbooks are made from recycled materials such as metal, fabric and wood.

The campaign sees the participation of volunteers who collect waste and perform communication tasks at stadiums and sport venues. They are also provided with training, uniforms, documents and tools to serve the work.

Audiences are also guided to collect waste at stadiums and exchange waste for gifts.

Eco-friendly water bottles, bags, boxes, cups, knifes, spoons, and folks replace single-use plastic products during the Games.

In the localities that host the events, there will be buses carrying the message of environmental protection in SEA Games 31.

SEA Games 31, themed “For a Stronger South East Asia”, will be held in the capital and 11 neighbouring provinces and cities from May 12 to 23.

Featuring 40 sports with more than 500 events, it is expected to attract around 10,000 participants. The biennial event was initially slated for late 2021 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vietnam aims to use 100 percent of environmentally-friendly plastic bags and packaging at shopping malls and supermarkets by 2025, according to a project on strengthening management of plastic waste in Vietnam approved by Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh.

Other goals include to collect, reuse, recycle and treat 85 percent of plastic waste; to reduce the volume of plastic waste dumped to ocean by half; to have 100 percent of tourism complexes, hotels and other lodging facilities not use non-biodegradable plastic bags and single-use plastic products by 2025.

Additionally, the project will gradually cut the production and consumption of non-biodegradable plastic bags and single-use plastic products in daily life; while raising awareness among organisations, enterprises and the community about the harmful effects of single-use plastic items to the environment, ecosystem and human health, and encouraging consumers to shift away from single-use and non-biodegradable plastics to eco-friendly alternatives.

It will campaign producers and distributors of single-use and non-biodegradable plastic products to shift to eco-friendly equivalents and promote the development and application of advanced technology in plastic waste management and manufacturing of environmentally-friendly products.

The project will also build a network of local communicators who are tasked to instruct people on how to properly classify, reuse and treat plastic waste and waste at large; and integrate knowledge about single-use and non-biodegradable plastics into school curriculums at all levels.

Vietnam is said to be the world’s fourth-largest marine plastic polluter after China, Indonesia and the Philippines. Each year, the country reportedly dumps an estimate of 300,000 – 700,000 tonnes of plastic waste into the ocean per year, accounting for 6 percent of the world’s marine plastics.
