Strategy needed for air freight to take off

Vietnam needs to have an appropriate strategy to promote the development of air logistics and tap its large potential, experts have said.

Le Vuong Quoc, Director of Gemix Vietnam Joint Stock Company, which exports fresh fruits, said that shipping fresh farm produce to Switzerland was not easy because this country did not have seaports. As there were no direct flights from Vietnam to Switzerland, his company must ship through a third country.

Quoc said this pushed up transportation costs, and his company could only export in a small volume.

In addition, air freight rates in Thailand were always around 30 percent lower than in Vietnam, plus there is a direct route from Thailand to Switzerland, which makes it difficult for Vietnamese firms to compete with Thailand.

Nguyen Dinh Tung, General Director of Vina Tand T Group Import – Export Company, said transporting agricultural products by air would ensure quality and shorten the time compared to by railway or by sea. However, high air logistics charges remained a limitation.

Tung pointed out that many Vietnamese airlines had not yet built routes to countries like Switzerland, Canada and the US, and shipping largely depended on foreign airlines.

In a recent workshop, Wackerbauer Lars, senior advisor of IPP Air Cargo, the first cargo airline in Vietnam, said that more than 80 percent of Vietnam’s logistics market was in the hands of foreign companies. Meanwhile, the freight demand kept increasing, fuelled by the boom of e-commerce.

What made Vietnam’s air logistics less competitive was that the freight rates remained high, he said, adding that airlines had not paid adequate attention to and poured adequate investment in air cargo transportation while the infrastructure system was limited.

Statistics of the Ministry of Industry and Trade showed that the market share of international airfreight of three domestic carriers, Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air and Jetstar Pacific, was around 12-15 percent, while the rest was foreign airlines.

Meanwhile, the air logistics of Vietnam had significant room for growth, driven by the enforcement of free trade agreements which would boost the goods circulation volume.

According to the International Air Transport Association, air logistics of Vietnam could expand at an average of 6.7 percent per year in 2015-35, higher than the world average at 3.9 percent and 4.6 percent of the Asia-Pacific region.

In 2021 when the COVID-19 pandemic was complex, international passenger transportation dropped by 93 percent to 500,000, but cargo transportation increased by 21.3 percent to 1.1 million tonnes over 2020.

Among five major airlines in operation in Vietnam, none had professionally and separately invested in cargo transportation. IPP Air Cargo which specialises in cargo transportation is waiting for approval.

Airlines should cooperate with enterprises in the logistics industry to establish an air logistics chain to make transportation more convenient and efficient at more reasonable costs.

According to Tran Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam has huge potential for developing air logistics.

However, ground infrastructure was one of the major challenges.

Airport infrastructure had not invested adequately for cargo freight. There are currently 10 international airports in Vietnam, but only two of them, Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat, have centres for air logistics.

Little attention was being paid to developing specialised centres for air logistics, which required large scale development and the integration of services and connectivity to reduce logistics costs.

It was necessary to have a strategy and cooperation with enterprises and organisations in the logistics industry to promote air logistics development, Hai said.

“An appropriate development strategy is important for air cargo transportation to take off,” Hai said.

SEA Games 31: Coach says Philippines’s U23 defense difficult to break through

Vietnam had many hurdles to overcome when facing a defensive opponent like the Philippines, and this serves as a lesson for the entire team to better their performance in upcoming matches, head coach Park Hang Seo of Vietnam’s U23 football team has said.

According to the organising committee of the Games, talking to the press on the two teams’ qualification match at the SEA Games 31 on May 8, Park affirmed that Vietnamese players completely controlled the match but could not penetrate the opponent’s defense.

They resolved well a number of counter-attacks, he said, commenting that a draw was clearly not the result the squad aimed at.

Park said he and his assistants will find a way to fix the issue and the team will try to work towards the best results.

After their match against the Philippines, Vietnam will meet Myanmar on May 13.

SEA Games 31: Philippines aims to defend SEA Games men’s basketball title

Head coach of the Philippine men’s basketball team Chot Reyes has affirmed the goal of defending the country’s championship title at SEA Games 31 in Vietnam, which, if realized, would be the 14th time in a row.

Reyes, however, said Indonesia and Vietnam will be formidable rivals on the road to realize the goal.

“We’re very seriously looking at the competition,” Reyes told CNN Philippines, noting that Indonesia has a strong line-up with a former NBA player who is over 2.1m tall, shot blocker and athletic, and that’s going to be a problem.

According to him, Vietnam, with four Viet-American players, is also going to be a problem and Thailand has always been tough. “So we’re not taking anyone for granted,” he said.

Reyes has named many familiar faces to SEA Games 31, such as June Mar Fajardo, Mo Tautuaa, RR Pogoy, Kevin Alas, Troy Rosario, Kib Montalbo, Isaac Go and Matthew Wright, Japan-based Kiefer and Thirdy Ravena, and cadets Will Navarro and Francis Lopez.

The Philippines has dominated regional men’s basketball, winning 18 of the 20 men’s events since the sport was played except in 1979 and 1989 when Malaysia won.

Vietnamese pagodas in Thailand get Vietnamese nameplates

A ceremony was held on May 8 to attach Vietnamese nameplates to the Tam Bao (whose Thai name is Wat Aphay Phati Kram) and Ngoc Thanh (Wat Anna Duoikai Tralom Prachom Phatsakan) pagodas of the Vietnamese community in Thailand.

The event saw the attendance of Most Venerable Thich Thien Cu, head of Annamnikaya – the Vietnam Buddhist branch in Thailand, leaders of two central Thai provinces – Suphan Buri and Chachoengsao – where the two pagodas are located, and hundreds of Vietnamese expats in the country.

The two are among the oldest Vietnamese pagodas in Thailand. There are approximately 20 pagodas of Vietnamese origin in Thailand where overseas Vietnamese meet and exchange with each other, especially during the holidays. Addressing the event, Ngo Trinh Ha, Vice chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs said Annamnikaya is one of the only two foreign Buddhist sects in Thailand.

The introduction and development of the Vietnamese Buddhist sect in Thailand and spiritual and worship activities in line with Vietnamese traditions, not only contribute to preserving the national cultural identity among the Vietnamese community in Thailand but also serve as a bridge connecting expatriates and people in the country, he said.

SEA Games 31: Numerous special events, tours in Hanoi to promote tourism

Hanoi is holding a myriad of events and tours to capitalise on the ongoing 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) to popularise images of the capital and Vietnam as a whole among international friends.

The municipal Tourism Department said it has ordered management boards of local destinations, accommodation establishments, and travel companies to develop and launch new and special tourism products on this occasion, including a cycling tour of the Bat Trang ancient pottery village, night services on Son Tay and Trinh Cong Son pedestrian streets, night tours of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel and Hoa Lo Prison, a double-deck bus city tour, and a tour for visitors to experience Southeast Asian cultures at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology.

Some prestigious travel companies such as Hanoitourist, Vietfoot Travel, LUX Travel, VI Travel, and Vietravel have debuted dozens of tours in which travellers can enjoy famous scenic landscapes and dishes of the capital and neighbouring localities.

A series of activities have been organised before SEA Games 31 and planned to take place during and after the region’s biggest sporting event.

Kicking off those activities, the Tourism Department held the “Get on Hanoi 2022” in late March, a highlight of which is a hot air balloon festival. This programme was followed by the Friendship Journey in Quoc Oai district, the Tourism Gift Festival in the pedestrian zone around Hoan Kiem Lake, the Bat Trang Tourism Week, the launch of the Son Tay Tourism Year and the Son Tay Ancient Citadel pedestrian street, the opening ceremony of the Saint Giong Festival, and the Love Festival in Thuong Tin district.

On this occasion, the Hanoi Centre for Investment, Trade, and Tourism Promotion will organise a tourism festival at the Hoan Kiem Lake pedestrian zone on May 13 – 15 and a craft village food and tourism festival on Le Quang Dao street in Nam Tu Liem district from May 19 to 23.

Communications have also been increased with the production of publications and gifts to introduce local tourism such as reprinting 3,500 tourism maps and 4,000 copies of a book on Hanoi. The Tourism Department has been coordinating with the Vietnam Television and the Hanoi Television and Radio Station to produce and broadcast a tourism promotion programme titled “Hanoi – Den de yeu” (Hanoi – Come to love) in two phases, from April to August and from September to December this year.

It is also working with CNN International to make and broadcast a video clip on local tourism with the presence of the SEA Games 31 logo. Efforts are also being made to increase introducing the city to international friends via tourism websites and social networks.

To gear up personnel for the Games, the Tourism Department has opened training courses for the cadres in charge of culture and tourism of the localities hosting competitions, travel businesses, and the 14 hotels accommodating the Games participating delegations, it noted.

For 2022, Hanoi looks to attract 9 – 10 million visitors, including 1.2 – 2 million foreigners. It targets around 3.2 million tourist arrivals in the second quarter of this year, including 150,000 – 200,000 foreigners.

The capital city welcomed about 2.8 million domestic visitors in the first quarter, an increase of 45.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

Themed “For a Stronger Southeast Asia”, SEA Games 31 will take place in Hanoi and 11 nearby localities from May 12 to 23.

The biennial event was initially slated for late December but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the second time Vietnam has hosted a SEA Games, after the first in 2003.
