Phu Yen: Measures to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and preparations for the upcoming inspection by the European Commission (EC) were discussed at a conference organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in the south-central coastal province of Phu Yen on February 27.
According to Vietnam News Agency, the conference addressed the urgency of enhancing strategies to meet the European Commission’s standards and remove the yellow card imposed on seafood exports. The yellow card serves as a warning to countries failing to combat IUU fishing, which can lead to severe trade restrictions if not adequately addressed.
During the conference, officials and stakeholders from the fisheries sector reviewed current practices and identified areas needing improvement. The discussions focused on strengthening law enforcement, improving the monitoring of fishing activities, and ensuring compliance with international regulations to ensure sustainable fishing practices.
Participants emphasized the importance of collaboration among local authorities, fishermen, and businesses to achieve the necessary reforms. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development expressed its commitment to providing support and resources to implement these changes effectively.
The upcoming EC inspection will assess the progress made in curbing IUU fishing practices. The results of this inspection will determine whether the yellow card will be lifted, which is crucial for the country’s seafood export industry.
