Classical Indian dances hit stages across the nation

Popular artists from India are performing classical dances in Hanoi and some central provinces till December 9.

The show series, which is co-hosted by the Indian Embassy and the Vietnam Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, aims to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The presentation was choreographed by the great scholar and seasoned art administrator Dr Sonal Mansingh, a Member of Parliament of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha).

The performance comprised three main themes; Ardha-nareeshwar, a concept that represents the synthesis of masculine and feminine energies of the universe and illustrates how Parvati, the female principal of God is inseparable from Shiva- the male principal of God; Dashavatara, a description of the evolutionary cycle from the Indic lore which shows 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu and Vande Mataram, a salutation to the Motherland of India through an evocative poem written by patriot-poet Mr Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in early 20th century.

“We are celebrating our 50th year of the diplomatic relationship,” Subhash P Gupta, Deputy Chief of Mission in the Indian Embassy to Vietnam told Vietnam News. “So this dance performance is actually important. This connects our people to people and our cultures.”

“This is a symbolic expression of love and affection between these our two societies,” he added. “We exchange our practices and enriched appetite and this is a mean to convey our good message to our Vietnamese respect.”

Dr Mansingh has been unique among dancers by mastering multiple Indian classical dance forms from different parts of India such as Bharatanatyam, Odissi and Chhau. She is a great scholar and seasoned art administrator who has performed, lectured and conducted workshops in 90 countries around the world.

“Indian classical dance is unique in the world, which uses the whole body every part of the face, every finger, and which pertains to life in a huge beautiful perennial eternal weight,” she confirmed. “It teaches us about love, devotion, goodness and it also tells you what you should not do: you should not be arrogant, you should not be devious, you should not be jealous…so many things that we learn in the books of religion. It is a living dancing religion.”

This is her third visit to Vietnam. The first time in 1983, when Prime Minister Pham Van Dong came to see her performance and she was awarded a Friendship Medal; the second in 2012.

She has received various honours like the Padma Bhushan prize (1992) and Padma Vibhushan prize (2003) from the Indian President.

“The audience here is so wonderful, that’s why I come again,” she said.

Nguyen Hanh Lien, a Hanoian learner at Swami Vivekananda Culture Centre in Hanoi, praised the show in Hanoi on December 1.

“I could feel the Indian spirit and culture in the show,” she said.

Lien said she has taken a course on Kuchipudi, an Indian traditional dance at the centre. She knows that Indian classical dance has various branches, which educate people about love, gratefulness for their country and other good characteristics of Indian people.

“Indian and Vietnamese folk dances share various same features on music, rhythms and spirit of dancers sent in the dance,” she noted. “All the dances contain the beauty in the art and the goodness of each people.”

The performance was an effort to bring Indian culture and art forms to the audience in Vietnam and is sponsored and facilitated by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi.

Besides the show in Hanoi on December 1, the repertoire group will also visit the provinces of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Ninh Thuan and Tay Ninh from December 4-9 to perform./.

Thai private, public sectors urged to jointly tackle tourism challenges in 2023

The public and private sectors are being urged to work together to prepare for uncertainty in the tourism industry next year, which may pose hurdles for Thailand’s ability to maintain its competitive edge.

Bhumikitti Ruktaengam, advisory chairman of the Phuket Tourist Association, stated that more integration is needed between the public and private sectors, especially regarding tourism policies. The cooperation will be crucial as the Thai tourism industry braces for uncertainties and increased competition in 2023.

Bhumikitti said domestic factors such as political tension for the upcoming general election next year would pose concerns for tourists visiting the country. Soaring energy prices and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis are affecting tourist expenditures and making it harder for authorities to raise expenditures per trip. Another source of uncertainty is the mass demonstrations against the Covid-19 curb in China, which create ambiguity in travel regulations and may impact the number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand in the future.

The advisory chairman warned that increased competition is a challenge for the Thai tourism industry, noting that some tourist groups have already switched their winter destinations from Thailand to neighboring countries. He emphasized that the country may lose more tourists to competitors unless cooperation and new methods are implemented to retain its competitiveness.

Meanwhile, Krod Rojanastien, president of the Thai Spa Association, suggested that Thailand focus on potential tourism products the country already has, which could tap high-spending travelers. He believes the country has strong potential in the health and wellness sector and urged the government to strengthen education programs related to these services to address the crucial problem of personnel shortages./.

Smart city development should be considered from the planning stage

Smart cities should be put into consideration from the urban planning stage to ensure synchronous development, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Huy Dung said.

Dung spoke at the two-day Vietnam Smart City Summit 2022, which opened on November 30 in Hnaoi. The event was held by the Vietnam Software and IT Services Association (VINASA). The deputy minister said smart city development was the implementation of digital transformation in the city scope with people being the centre.

The Government has raised policies to promote the development of smart cities to optimise resources, ensure sustainable development, protect the environment, ensure security and convenience for residents as well as accelerate socio-economic development.

The Prime Minister in August 2018 approved a project on sustainable smart city development in Vietnam.

On November 11, the Government issued Resolution No 148 on an action plan to implement the Politburo’s Resolution 06 on planning, construction, management and sustainable urban development to 2030 with a vision to 2045.

The focus would be placed on restructuring the information technology infrastructure, forming shared platforms for urban areas, speeding up digital transformation in urban management and building e-Government toward digital Government.

As smart city development was a long-term process and required significant resources for implementation, it was important to include it in the overall urban planning to ensure synchronous development, Dung said.

He pointed out that currently, localities mainly focused on developing and providing smart city services and utilities associated with e-Government and digital Government but did not pay adequate attention to planning and smart city management to solve fundamental problems of urban development including traffic, energy, and environment.

Thus, the efficiency in smart city development was not as high as expected in terms of improving the quality of life and the satisfaction of the people, he said.

Nguyen Van Khoa, VINASA’s President, said that Vietnam had large potential and opportunity for smart city development. However, the biggest difficulty was the lack of a clear and transparent legal framework, especially in public-private partnerships and procedures for investment, bidding and IT services provision.

Moreover, urban areas had not paid attention to smart planning and basic infrastructure, Khoa said.

Nguyen Nhat Quang, Director of the VINASA Science and Technology Institute, said it was important to develop requirements of smart cities for urban planning.

To date, 54 out of 63 provinces and cities were implementing smart city projects at different stages. 30 provinces and cities approved smart city development projects/programmes/plans, 15 approved ICT architecture for smart city development, 38 implemented provincial intelligent operation centres (IOCs), 21 implemented urban-level and municipal IOCs, 17 implemented apps for smart tourism services and more than 10 implemented apps for smart traffic, controlling and urban order./.

To narrow the gap, ministries, agencies and localities should take solutions associated with innovative startups, combine internal and external resources, and carry forward traditions, culture and the spirit of solidarity and self-reliance of Vietnamese people in these efforts, the PM noted.

The State has directed, coordinated and devised institutions and policies, and created a favourable environment for innovative startups, he affirmed.

Chinh expressed his hope that through Techfest, managers, investors, scientists, innovative startups, and localities will get valuable experience to further support the domestic ecosystem, and called for more contributions to it.

In his remarks, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat said Techfest Vietnam 2022 seeks solutions to the sectors greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and having potential such as health care, education and energy.

Earlier, PM Chinh and other delegates visited an exhibition displaying innovative startup products and services.

Held annually since 2015, Techfest Vietnam aims to promote innovative solutions from startups in the age of rapidly developing technology, and attract experts, intellectuals, domestic entrepreneurs and overseas Vietnamese to develop the economy.
