Mariangela Zappia, Italian Ambassador to the US, speaks at the Italian National Space Day

Mariangela Zappia, Italian Ambassador to the US, speaks at the Italian National Space Day on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, at the Embassy of Italy in Washington DC. The day was inaugurated by the Italian government as an occasion to raise awareness of the Italian contributions to global space.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C., hosted the “Italian National Space Day” on Thursday 15 December. The celebration was launched in 2020 by the Italian government, to commemorate the launch in 1964 of the San Marco I satellite program, which made Italy the third country in the world with a presence in space, after the United States and the Soviet Union. The event, organized in collaboration with ICE, Asi (Italian Space Agency) U.S. Space Foundation, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and George Washington University, saw the participation of the main Italian and US leaders in the space sector.

“It’s a special day for us. We want to underline the Italian expertise, experience and vision in a rapidly growing sector and draw attention to the main economic, commercial and social benefits that space can offer, both nationally and internationally,” said the ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, in her address. The ambassador also recalled that Italy was “the first major European country to sign a bilateral agreement with NASA, and the first to join the Artemis agreements.”

“Italy has a long history in science, exploration and space,” said Chirag Parikh, Deputy Assistant to the President and Executive Secretary of the National Space Council, in his remarks, underlining that for the United States “Italy continues to be an indispensable partner in space cooperation in the civil, security and commercial sectors.”

“Italy and the United States have a very rich history of collaboration. A key example is the Italian involvement in the International Space Station. It can probably be said that there would be no International Space Station without Italian participation. Research and leadership they displayed was incredible in every aspect of the technology that we’ve been able to observe on Earth, especially here in the United States,” said Kelli Kedis Ogborn, VP of Space Commerce and Entrepreneurship at the Space Foundation, a nonprofit founded in 1983, to offer information, educational programs, and collaborations in space exploration and the space-to-Earth industry that characterize the global space ecosystem.

The Italian National Space Day was attended by representatives of many American companies, including Blue Origin, SpaceX, Axiom Space, AWS, Sierra Space, Boeing, Virgin Orbit, L3 Harris, Virgin Galactic, Firefly, NASA and Rocketjet Aerodyne. The Italian aerospace industry and institutions were represented by Leonardo and its subsidiaries, Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space, Avio, Argotec, Altec, RME, D-Orbit, T4i, Breton, Picosats, Space Factory, Astra Space, BluElectronic, AEREA , CEI Piedmont (Agency for Investment, Tourism and Export), Emilia-Romagna (Art-ER Attractiveness Research Territory Emilia-Romagna), CIRA (Italian Aerospace Research Center), Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and Intesa SanPaolo.

“For Italy, the United States is one of the main partners and we are very interested in their market and I know that the United States is also looking at us, because we have a historical capacity in space. I think that in the future we will be able to collaborate, with great opportunities in the commercial market, which is a rapidly growing market for us, and the United States is a target for us,” said Cristina Sgubin, Secretary General and General Counsel of Telespazio-Leonardo.

Prime Minister’s tour of Europe highly successful: Foreign Minister

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visits to Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Belgium, and attendance in the ASEAN – EU Commemorative Summit were highly successful, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son told the media.

In an interview granted to the press, Minister Son said the tour from December 9 to 15 took place amid flourishing relations between Vietnam and the three European countries. This was the first visit to Luxembourg by a high-ranking leader of Vietnam in 20 years and the first high-level delegation exchange with the Netherlands in three years.

During the visits of the Vietnamese PM, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgium, which have set up comprehensive partnerships and strategic partnerships in climate change and sustainable agriculture with Vietnam, have shown the importance they attach to the stature and role of the Southeast Asian nation, along with their determination to comprehensively step up cooperation.

During the trip, PM Chinh met with most senior leaders of the three countries’ governments, parliaments, and royal families, who highly valued Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements and growing stature in the world.

They affirmed the wish to work with Vietnam in promoting cooperative ties in an increasingly substantive and effective manner, sustainably developing the economies after the pandemic, effectively dealing with international issues, and responding to global challenges, according to Son.

He noted that in each of the three European countries, PM Chinh chaired business forums and had meetings with leaders of regions and major enterprises. Up to 30 cooperation agreements were signed between ministries, sectors, research institutes, and businesses of Vietnam and the three nations.

Vietnam and the three European countries agreed to work closely and support each other at international forums and organisations such as the ASEAN – EU cooperation framework, the Asia – Europe Meeting (ASEM), and the United Nations, especially when Vietnam, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgium are members of the UN Human Rights Council, so as to contribute to regional and global peace, security, cooperation, and sustainable development.

Regarding the East Sea issue, leaders of the three European countries affirmed their support for the maintenance of security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the region; the settlement of disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); and the negotiations on an equitable, substantive, and effective code of conduct (COC) in the East Sea between ASEAN and China, the official went on.

Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgium also pledged to assist Vietnam in terms of finance, technology, human resources training, and regulation perfection to boost the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy transition, and sustainable development.

Son said PM Chinh’s official visits to the three European countries reaped all-round successes and were important milestones in Vietnam’s relations with the countries.

With regard to the commemorative summit marking the 45th anniversary of ASEAN – EU relations, he noted it was the first time ASEAN leaders had met with all the leaders of EU member nations, which demonstrated that both sides highly treasure and are strongly committed to fostering their partnership. It was also a good opportunity for the two sides’ leaders to identify important orientations for developing ASEAN – EU ties more strongly in the time to come.

An outstanding outcome was that the summit issued a joint statement which emphasised that ASEAN and the EU attach importance to each other’s role and standing; pledge to further solidify their strategic partnership on the basis of international law and equitable and mutually beneficial cooperation; and will bolster cooperation in economy, trade, supply chain stabilisation, maritime security, connectivity, healthcare capacity building, digital transformation, natural disaster management, environmental protection, climate change response, energy transition, and green and sustainable development, according to Minister Son.

The two sides also agreed to enhance multilateral cooperation, share common values and interests, and promote international law, and resolve regional and global challenges.

They stressed the importance of the maintenance of peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea, as well as the settlement of disputes by peaceful means. They appealed for the full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and building of an effective and substantive COC that matches international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS, he noted.

At the summit, the Vietnamese delegation led by PM Chinh proactively and actively made important and responsible contributions to the event’s success, in terms of both summit preparations, discussions, and document drafting, the official added./.

Noi Bai airport expects 80,000 passengers on peak day during Lunar New Year season

The Noi Bai international airport in Hanoi is expected to serve 450 flights and up to 80,000 passengers on the peak day during the travel season for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday (Tet) – Vietnam’s biggest and longest traditional festival.

However, the figure is yet to match the highest daily passenger number during the summer of 2022. June 25 saw over 104,000 passengers, nearly 93,000 of whom were domestic travellers, going through the airport.

Leaders of the airport said a host of international airlines plan to resume flights this winter, with good growth projected for the number of international flights to and from Noi Bai during Tet.

It is estimated that there will be 220 international flights carrying some 22,000 passengers landing in and taking off from the airport per day during the peak period. The figures are equal to approximately 70% of those recorded in the same period in 2019 before the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Noi Bai has already prepared plans to meet the upcoming high demand, under which more check-in counters and security facility will be opened and operated in full capacity, IT advances applied to calculate peak hours of each area, and coordination with transport police enhanced to regulate transport around the airport, among other activities.

According to a recent dispatch, officials, civil servants, public employees and workers of State administrative and socio-political organisations will have seven days off from January 20 (Friday) to January 26 (Thursday) for Tet celebrations. Travelling is expected to surge from several days just before Tet./.
